If Ali was born ten years later

What if Muhammad Ali was born ten years later?

First of all he would have missed all that Nation of Islam bulls*** and kept his birth name Cassius Clay. Secondly he would have missed the Vietnam draft. The latter is important because he would have been able to keep his form and his shape better. You can see noticeable differences in how he fights before and after the draft. Granted some of this was related to age. However I believe that being out of boxing for as long as he was had a profound effect on his ability as a boxer. Sort of a ring rust which he could never quite shake off.

I think that he would have smashed anyone who challenged him all the way into the early 90s. With 70s and 80s conditioning, he would have been phenomenal. Even as an older man, Tyson, Holyfield and Lennox Lewis would have had great difficulty trying to beat him. The Parkinson's disease and the damage to his legs might not have happened either.

What do you think?

I pretty much agree with everything you just said. However, I still do believe Tyson would have knocked him out, but it would have been around Round 5 or so... not Round 1 like a lot of other Fighters. Ali was a special kind of Fighter, and in my opinion one we have yet to see again.

No

no idea but it's a shame he missed his prime years due to the whole draft business. it's almost scary to think how good he would have been

and as much of a beast tyson is, i think ali had way too much ring smarts and would've danced around tyson before KOing him in the later rounds or winning by UD

edit: i mean ali pre-draft. so cassius clay. tyson would have a much better chance against ali post-draft

Tyson looked like he was the answer for how to beat fighters like Ali. If you watch the fight he has with Larry Holmes who had a very similar style to Ali, then that's probably what would have happened had they met. I mean s***, if Henry Cooper can ko Ali (which he actually did but Ali was saved by the bell and his corner cheated by using an illegal aid) then Tyson can too.

But this isn't just about Tyson vs Ali, that's been done to death. This about what kind of fighter Ali might be if he'd began his career in the 1970s.

I suggest you to at least respect the word of Islam instead of calling it bull****.

I didn't say Islam was bulls***, I said the organisation known as The Nation of Islam at the time was bulls***. It's leader Elijah Muhammad was a crook and a hypocrite. I think they might have been racist as well.

Yeah, and to be honest I've always called BS on the whole draft thing. To this day I believe he just wanted a way out of the war and used that to do it.

I know that's a very unpopular opinion, but that's what I believe and I'm sticking to my guns on this one.

Still a cheap way to get around it. It wouldn't be any different then shooting himself in the foot.

You make it seem like it was a bad thing. I'd travel to the ends of the Earth if it meant I avoided fighting in that stupid war.

Yes the war was very stupid and it was about politics. But hiding behind that belief was cowardly, pretty ironic considering the sport where the competition was about who the bigger man was, because he should have been a man about it and answered the draft. I mean really.

Do people really think the military would take a guy who gets hit in the head over and over again until either he or his opponent goes down for a ten count on the front lines, or even in real combat at all? Sure he would be wearing a helmet, but the risk of long term effects would be too great. Yeah now we know he wouldn't have had those problems had he went in, but at the time nobody knew, but imagine how much of a national icon he would've become had he did his time and returned to Boxing right after... more people would've been lining up to pay him whatever he wanted for each fight.

Sure he ran the risk of being killed over there, but either way he would've gone down as a hero and more people would have acknowledged him more for it and would've gotten so much more respect for it too.

I don't think it was because he was a coward. He wasn't stupid, he had legitimate political opinions concerning race and religion. I think that had a lot to do his decision to dodge the draft. If he was a white man, he would have probably been allowed to get away with it. Then there's the peer pressure from the Nation of Islam. They were involved in this too. But I don't think he was a coward.

I disagree with the whole being white getting away with it thing.

At the time the White Man symbolized the average american and american hero, and if a white man dodged the draft it would be a spit in the face to their own kind and I believe had he been white, he would've gotten even more heat.

You think a white man in the 1960s would have got more heat than a black man? Lol what?

Because of what the White man represented, the white man represented every single white soldier that had fought for the US ever since World War I, and for a white man to turn around and say they refuse to fight for this country, is indeed spitting in the face of every white man that has served in the military.

That's why I believe a white man would have gotten more heat, because of what he represented.
