Is it from strictly just winning or winning and losing, just at a lower pace if losing? Also, what does the map look like? What can you do on it? If you play as a Buu character, can you absorb stuff? That would be awful and unbalanced, so no. All races learn techniques from mentors, not based on their race, if there are any absorbing attacks in the game any species can use them. Levelling up come from the offline mode only, you cannot level up by playing online (at least in the network test.) The "map" is just a small hub, not even really big enough to glance at twice, with shops and access to missions, mentors and so on.
