Vegeta was not the one that was going soft on Frieza, nigglett. That was typical Goku. Vegeta outright states that Goku is his only concern.
I brought up Vegeta because he's a Saiyan and it's in his nature too.

Considering what's happened since the Cell Saga, I agree with Goku. He really should've just stayed dead.

What happens every time these characters are pushed into a corner?

Something magical happens.

If every time I was pushed into a corner and something magical happened (Hehe! Giggity!), I would likely have the same mentality. I have Gods and magic balls to back me up (Goo!).

Well, I was expecting for Goku to actually mature a little bit through the later parts of the series, especially after getting trounced twice by Beerus, but he's unforunately stayed stagnant in that regard for nigh on 13 years.

Magic isn't an excuse for acting like a complete douche. Sure, things can be fixed, but Goku really ought to think on whether he wants to get into a situation where they have to be fixed.

Didnt Goku when he first let Freeza go on Namek that he didn't want to ever see him again?

Why the change of heart?

The problem is Goku has never been suitably punished for his attitude.

He let Piccolo go - Piccolo becomes a powerful ally.

He let vegeta go - Vegeta becomes a powerful ally.

He let Freeza power up to 100% - Goku still won.

He gave Freeza his energy - Trunks killed him anyway and Goku would have been able to because he luckily learnt IT.

He gave Cell a senzu bean - Gohan's hidden power was awakened.

He humoured Vegeta despite being able to finish him quickly with ssj3 - He eventually killed Boo with a spirit bomb and all the damage was undone.

He let Fat Boo live - He eventually killed Boo with a spirit bomb and all the damage was undone.

He destroyed the potara earing - He eventually killed Boo with a spirit bomb and all the damage was undone.

He didn't finish Boo off by giving it his all in ssj3 from the start - He eventually killed Boo with a spirit bomb and all the damage was undone.

He didn't heed King Kai's warning and asked Beerus to fight, also showing him how strong he was (potentially an eventual danger to Beerus) - Beerus was alright about it.

He didn't go all out from the start as a ssjg, even though he knew it had a time limit - Beerus didn't destroy the earth.

If Goku had made a mistake and actually been punished for it - e.g. his friend/son/wife couldn't be wished back or something, then maybe he'd learn.

As for Vegeta - this film just seems like a step back for him, I don't think he'd let Freeza go though. I guess it's hard to completely detach him from his pride very often because it defined him for so long. A lot of people dislike how he gave it up in BOG - which is really stupid and completely missing the point.

They're Saiyans. It's in their nature.
So, it's in their nature to endanger the entire Universe just so they can have a good fight?
Uh, yeah...? They're Saiyajins. Vegeta just seems to be better at suppressing that urge these days, for the most part.

I'm not defending their actions, I'm just saying that's how Saiyajins have always been. To be fair though, Vegeta didn't see Freeza as a threat until he transformed, which was after Vegeta wanted a turn.

One more thing...

Goku and Vegeta are not heroes in the traditional sense.
