The current state of multiplayer in video games

I've been finding more and more recently that multiplayer isn't really fun or unique any more.

Multiplayer, for me, started out as 2-player splitscreen in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, racking up a high score way back in the late 90's/early 2000's, or even further back playing as Tails in Sonic 2/3 and constantly dying off-screen as my brother sped off as Sonic.

The multiplayers were far from perfect, but they were fun, frustrating in a kind of joyful and memorable way, and normally co-operative, and if they were competitive then it always felt special or fresh because most of them were different.

This year, however, has left me feeling really quite...Disappointed? I suppose that would be the right word.

Every major multiplayer I've seen has felt exactly the same. Halo 5 and CoD:AW look like re-skins of one another, Unity just feels the same as last year's Splinter Cell, we keep getting re-releases this year, Halo, Last of Us and GTA V are particularly sour tastes, as as I realise all of this repetition, I also realise that I only notice the problem here because I just can't find enjoyment in them any more.

I'm definitely not too old for games, I still love to play, and the older multiplayer games are still fun for me, but I get bored quite quickly once it comes around to FPS, basically the only game that is FPS that doesn't bore me now is Payday 2, and even that just feels like a more involved and personal crime-painted Left 4 Dead.

I've come to see that the majority of multiplayer components recently are all far too similar, and either result in, or are the result of, a lack of enjoyment.

Has anyone else noticed this recently? I can play older games quite happily, even ones I never actually played before the past few months like Contra, and love them, but each time I see or try out a new game, no matter how good or bad the experience is, I just become very bored or frustrated once it comes to online.
