Is it illegal to not save people?

Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

Say your house was on fire and someone was in it and you had the option to save them or your phone/computer/whatever and you picked the latter, besides the morally reprehensible decision you made, is it actually legal to do that?

Other than a few people, I would most definitely save my computer or PlayStation.

I guess it could be considered murder/manslaughter? But if you definitely didn't start the fire and didn't do anything to hinder their survival beyond not help them...can it be said you killed them or would the courts not do anything, besides investigate?

No you'd be fine. Choosing not to save people in need is not manslaughter. Morally reprehensible yes but not illegal. Putting an easily replaceable object above a person is pretty stupid though if you ask me.

Unless you're a doctor or something though? Aren't they legally required to help people in need of medical attention?

I'm not sure if you're joking or being serious, but if you're not kidding this is actually disgusting! You'd save your friggen playstation before you'd save A LIVING PERSON?!?! What.. The f***.. Is wrong with you?

I'd save my worst enemy before I'd save my playstation! Does human life really mean that little to you? I think you need to reassess your views on life mate, because they're obviously warped to hell!

Even though you'd even say this and I find it utterly wrong and terrifying, I'd still save you before I'd save a hunk of hardware and plastic.

Well TBH, if my worst enemy was in the fire and I had a choice to save my Playstation, I would go with the latter. Just saying.

Otherwise yeah, I would go for the person.

I think this might be a good read.
Not quite the same thing, Good Samaritan laws exists to protect people who do save people. Basically if you try to save someone's life and you cause them harm, you can't be sued for it. So say you pulled someone from a burning building but while you were doing it you broke their leg, they can't sue you for that.

That aside, in a lot of countries there's no general obligation to save people. You could walk past someone drowning and do nothing about it and won't be in any legal trouble. Morally that would be a horrendous thing to do but there's no legal ramifications. Though that changes if it's your the one who creates the situation that puts someone in danger, you do then have an obligation to help get them out of it. I think people like doctors and paramedics are supposed to as well but it'll depend on the situation. Parents have to rescue their children. I think in the US spouses have a duty as well but I'm not 100% on that one.

On the other hand, the amount of times I've read about have a go heroes getting themselves into trouble or killed. It's not always a good idea to get involved. Having said that, if you're stupid enough to run into a burning building so that you can rescue your games console, the least you can do is try and help out anyone trapped in the building.

Of course! If there's very little that can be done then you shouldn't have to risk your life. Two dead bodies isn't going to accomplish anything! But if you willingly run back into the wreckage to rescue your playstation or your computer knowing there is somebody else in there then I dont even feel bad about saying this.. You're a cock head! End of story. Even if you're on your way out and grab your replaceable gaming console when you know there's somebody else near by who NEEDS your help to survive, you drop the playstation and do everything you possibly can within the limits of your abilities to help this person. It may not be your legal responsibility, but it sure as shoot is your moral responsibility.

Even if its somebody you utterly hate, you do what you can! If you have the ability to do something to improve this persons chances and if don't do a damn thing, you are officially no better than said person! Have fun explaining that one to their grieving families and friends.

"Nah sorry mate, I could have dragged his a*** out but I needed to grab my playstation! Better luck next time, ay?!"

*BTW by me saying 'you' allot I'm not referring to you Pelador! Just incase you're wondering :p*

Nah, it's actually fine. We have good samaritan laws to counteract the risk if helping people, but a person does not have a duty to save someone unless the impending danger is caused by their tortious actions. So if you negligently or intentionally set the house on fire, you'd be liable for the death.

Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

But what makes people so special?

I'd save a baby or a child but there are 7 billion humans in he world why should every single one matter to you or me?

I don't see what's so wrong about generally not liking people as far as I'm concerned humans are more bad than good. Why should everyone be obligated to do the "right" thing when the "right" thing is merely the perspective of the masses?
Flip the situation around in to a world where nobody cares about each other and then a person saves someone, they'd be "wrong" or "disgusting" then wouldn't they?
So it's fairly meaningless to say what a person "should" do when their perspective in no way has to reflect yours.

I don't see why the law should make you save someone you have no responsibility for. Not here to save the world why should every living person matter to each other, why do we have to apparently regard all humans as better than everything else in the world? We're just animals not gods.

Since when does someone having a different perspective to you make them incorrect?
Just because something is what most people would do, does that actually make it the thing any person should have to do?
Morality is a fairly daft notion, everyone is different you can't force people to have the same views as everyone else and define them as a bad person for doing something you wouldn't.

Obviously there's a line when it comes down to being part of society though your sense of morality might make you think you should throw people off buildings but well that's downright stupid as nobody would put up with it.

So why "should" you save someone?
Because the majority of people would try?

What kind of reason is that? You either try or you don't, want to or not.
How can you say anyone's decision is the wrong thing to do just because it's not something you would do?
It'd be nice if everyone would think about how not everyone is the same or has to feel the same as they do, before telling them how they "should" live their lives.

Each person is a very complex individual with their own lives. If you have any respect for your own life, you should feel obliged to save somebody else if you see them in a situation where they could die. Just as you have things that make you, well, you, that person has things that makes them them. You can imagine how agonising burning to death or drowning would be, so why would you let somebody else suffer that fate?

You don't know what that person or their children will end up doing in the future. You have no way of knowing how important each individual might become. Even if they're only important for their descendants a hundred years in the future. What gives you the right to decide "Oh well he's probably not worth saving. He's only a stupid human. There's another 6 billion out there so he won't matter in the grand scheme of things." You're completely and utterly wrong and very stupid if you believe this. I'm not even using morals in my arguement. Just cold hard logic. What happens if you go back in time and shoot Admiral Nelson before he does anything important? France wins the battle of Trafalgar and England gets invaded. What happens if Martin Luthor King's dad dies in a fire because someone choose not to rescue him? No Martin Luthor King and no inspirational leader for the civil rights movement. I'll give one more example just to make it absolutely clear how silly your arguement is. What if it turned out that one of your ancestors was rescued from a fire? If everyone had your attitude then you might not be born. Tons of important people would never have been born and loads of important s*** might not have got done.

Throw morality into the arguement on top of that which is the reason we have hospitals by the way and why you're still alive and you have a pretty open and shut case why saving people is much more important than saving some useless plastic and wires.
