What are some methods you use to lower your utility bills to save money? I'd like to know what some of you do, or what you buy to help out. Edited by Professor Gohan, Nov 8 2014, 08:19 PM.

1. If any electronics parts is on stand by and you don't need to use it, switch it off. 2. Get a electrician to check your wiring and make sure there isn't any leakage = waste of power. 3. Buy energy saving light bulks, look for the highest energy (highest you can afford) star rating for tv's, cooking appliances. At the end of the day, that's all we can do really, the electricity companies and gas are ripping consumers off. Off showering there products to Asia and tell the people in America or Australia that they have to increase those prices because of shortages, while on the side they make millions selling to Asia. |

Like Ollie said. Converting filament bulbs to lower wattage compact fluorescent or LED bulbs. And I mean all of them in the house. Also, when you leave for the day, turn the AC to only kick on when above 78-80. Depends on your preference for that. When you're not home, the AC doesn't need to constantly be on a low temp. Use natural light whenever possible. For instance right now I don't have any lights on and all of the windows are cracked. Ensure that your place has proper seals around the doors and windows. And if you own the house, invest in some window mesh shades. |

If you have clothes that need drying then use a line if you can instead of a dryer. Wash dishes by hand too instead of a dishwasher. Don't turn the heating on unless you're freezing to death, |

The most effective way to lower energy bills is to invest. Like they said new bulbs are a start. New heater and a/c units do literally get better every year. They are a must for high energy bills. I use a gas heater and it is much cheaper compared to the electric bill. A new a/c unit saved over $100 a month on electric this summer.

Main thing we do is not try to heat the whole house up or just sit wrapped in blankets with no heating at all, boiling the kettle for a hot water bottle too that saves way more electric than leaving a heater on for an hour or more. |
