British members of parliament get about 60k a year and they're getting a pay rise. Is this acceptable?

It's a responsible job, it's not easy and it's actually a lot of hard work and dedication. None the less 60k? Come on. It should be a 20k job at most. Same as a school teacher.

Most politicians here in the states pull solid six figure salaries. President Barack Obama for example makes about 400,000 dollars American. He leads the free world so whatever, but he also gets about 50,000 for expenses, 100,000 for travel, 19,000 for entertainment, and after retirement he earns a 200,000 dollar a year pension.

What really sets off politics is the use of PACs and Super PACs. Politicial Action Committees, or PACs, fund election campaigns. Up to a certain level. Here's what grinds my gears: Super PACs! You know what those are for? Whatever! They can't be spent DIRECTLY on a campaign, but they can spend money independently politically? What does that mean? People and corporations give these politicians tens of millions of dollars to protect their interests and campaign for them ACROSS THE TABLE.

A politician could get a 10,000 pound salary and still end the year with millions in his bank account. It doesn't matter, the money comes from anywhere.

It's a lot more transparent here and harder for them to get extra money. If they want to spend 50p on a packet of crisps then they have to fill out a bunch of forms or they get in trouble. However a lot of mps are former business people or lawyers. So they're already rich when they get elected. Even more reason not to pay them so much in my opinion.

In short, yes they are paid too much. I agree with you that it's a much more time- and effort-consuming job than a lot of the public seem to think, but no, they shouldn't be earning that much, especially with the country's economy in the state it's in. At least with athletes, or CEOs of big companies, they can justify their pay by pointing to the revenue their company/job creates, but politicians do not generate revenue (and if you were treating politics and government as a business, they'd be a business that's leaking money out of the a***, and in the real world that would mean a cut in jobs and pay). I wouldn't say go as low as 20k a year, since these jobs are important, but anything above 40k seems unfair.

Presidents deserve that kind of money. Easily the toughest job in America.

You only have to look at before and after pictures to see that. It ages you fast.

What's the American equivelant of a member of parliament? A congressman?

I would guess. I really couldn't care less about politics, will definitely not be voting for anything when I can.

If you don't vote then people get in who shouldn't. People make decisions that don't benefit everyone because they don't need to cater to certain demographics. Like how 18-24 years olds are ignored because they have the lowest voter turn out but over 65s get everything their way because they have such a key role in the elections. If you want politics to be better than you need to vote, not the other way around.

I disagree. Leader of the free world? Tough job. I honestly think that our Teachers, Law Men (The Honest ones anyway), and Single parents (I'm a little bias'd on that one) do just as much if not more and don't get paid nearly as much. Nor do they have dozens of mega conglomerate corporations or resources backing them up.

Only the toughest because of being the spear head for the entire country. Toughest because everyone points their finger and disrespects the president before anyone else who makes and assigns the laws.
People forget there even is a congress and would rather lay blame to the head man.

That's something that's a little bit different here too. Whilst most people do reckon that the prime minister is a bit of a plonker, they have no problem criticising any MP who fluffs up. We basically recognise that his cabinet and his other ministers are just as incompetent as he is. If not more so.

But I really don't care about politics to begin with. My parents don't vote and they are doing very fine with their lives. I'm sure I'll be good as long as I study hard and work hard.

"Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the war room!"

Most Senators and Governors in the US make up to 1 mil per year.

Of course, this also depends on their seniority, and how many Super PACs they have.

A lot of these politicians are also business owners, and hide chunks of money in off-shore accounts, so it's difficult to tell exactly how much they make from simply being state representatives.
