Are we as a society doing enough to find and remove peadophiles from positions where they can abuse children? I get the impression that there's not enough prevention and we don't do enough to make sure that children aren't being abused. We only move when something goes wrong and even then there's no guarantee that they won't strike again somewhere else. They're easy enough to find. They go where the children are. Hospitals, schools, nurseries and television studios. Root them out and place them as far away from children as possible. We obviously know that's where you find peadophiles but how do you go about proving one is a peadophile? That's actually pretty easy. If you want to find a peadophile just ask around where they work. I'm sure most of us knew of one or more teachers or staff at our schools who got into trouble or were known for being that sort of creepy. So ask the children who they work with. They will be more honest and unbiased than any of the suspects co workers will. What kind of evidence is this? It's not evidence. You obviously can't arrest or remove people based on the words of children but it does build a case for which you can find the evidence further into the investigation. Do this, get more predators put on lists and get them away from our children. Because I don't believe that it's happening enough right now. |

Because until that happens they haven't done anything wrong. Saying we should remove pedophiles from being around children is like saying we should remove straight men from being around women, because they might rape them. Simply being a pedophile isn't something that should be punished, it's something far out of someones control who they're attracted too, it's no different to being gay or straight. |

Doing all that creates an environment of paranoia and "omg pedos are everywhere! Save the kids!" mentality. |

I don't think it's that easy at all though, children are easy to manipulate sexually abusing them doesn't necessarily mean doing anything harmful, as in that they know is bad. Wouldn't be hard to convince them that it's just some kind of fun game, it seems like a lot of paedophiles have got children thinking stuff like that anyway the kids don't usually know what's going on. I think the only way to prevent it, not completely of course is to teach sex education to younger kids not just when they're about 10 and could have been raped or abused for years unknowingly. Kids under 6 or so are still going to have trouble understanding though. I don't think it'd work just to watch where paedo's might lurk. Everyone that hangs around in parks would gain a reputation, I'm sure there are people who genuinely do love to watch children play. It's a beautiful thing after all, innocent freedom. But then sitting watching kids be happy becomes a sordid affair no matter what your thoughts on it are. So I think such a thing would be harmful towards people who aren't paedo's more than paedo's themselves. Once anyone has been labelled as a potential creep in a community their whole reputation is sullied. "They never found any evidence but he is a bit of a weirdo don't go near him" And then you have protective parents who take a more violent approach, been accused of looking at some big burly guys daughter you're getting knocked out if he sees you. I think it's more children that need to be watched than the people who watch them really it's a hard thing to prevent but if people could determine when a child has been abused quicker the freak could be stopped before they do too much physical or/and mental damage. All playparks should have camera's surveying the area for one thing, schools too(most do these days I think) Child abuse can only truly be prevented when someone shows the obvious signs of being some kind of freaky but not all of them can't hide it. |

Peadophiles know what they are. They choose to enter employment where they will be working with children. That is wrong. I'm not saying throw them in prison. Of course that's not right if they haven't committed an offense. But all peadophiles should be registered and they should not be allowed to work with children. The difference with environments that have children and not just adults is that children are vulnerable. They can't defend themselves like adults can. They don't understand about sexual misconduct or anything like that. Now maybe not every person who's attracted to children would abuse them but why take the risk? We need to be protecting them from the potential dangers that a lot of these people bring. Adults don't need protecting for the most part but children definitely do. That's why you remove peadophiles and not straight men. You know I might be falling for the usual media blowing stuff out of proportion nonsense but with all the revelations from operation yew tree and such I'm not so sure. I reckon there's plenty out there who we need to remove and register and I believe there are some still sitting in high places. Which is how so many high profile cases were able to be ignored for so many decades. |

I don't think much can be done about peadophiles. You only really know someone is a peadophile once they sexually abuse a child and get caught out. |

Being a paedophile is probably something most of them would keep on the down-low before actually abusing a child anyway. "Asking around the schools" isn't much of a solution, and dealing to people before they have actually done something is no way to treat human beings. It's no different from the use of race or ethnicity as grounds for suspecting someone of having committed an offence. There's already a bias against men in particular in early childhood education. Unfortunately, I think society often views men with suspicion when they show an interest in working with children - which is very unfair. There was a Census of Early Childhood Education a while back over here, and male teachers only made up about 2% of them. |

You make an interesting point about bias towards males. At school we always kept a suspicious eye on some of the more creepy male teachers (turns out we were right about all of them by the way) but never thought to question the integrity of the female ones. Yet I've read in the news about female nursery teachers and nurses being prosecuted for child abuse before. So that would of course be a flaw in my plan. Plus like a few of you said, there is an issue of targeting people who haven't legally done anything wrong. I just think it's a shame that people have to be abused before anything can be done. There must be ways to prevent it. |

Fortunately, you can't get away with half of what you used to back in the day. Technology has advanced to a point where they will be exposed a lot quicker. |

There's no way to even find out who is one until they strike. No one is going to admit to it. Looking around schools won't help either. |

Pedophilia is a mental condition, not something that people should be punished for. If our legal system was smart enough to understand why certain people are attracted to children, they would give them the help they need - a treatment to cure the illness. Imprisoning people with mental illnesses is not really a good solution to some criminal activities out there. I hope the government one day grants more funding to treating mental diseases and finding a way to cure them. People's lives won't improve until we get rid of the causes.

I never said anything about imprisoning. Not unless they abuse a child. Mental problems don't excuse that. They shouldn't be allowed to work with children. That's all. |

I think they should just get a tracker thing like for people on probation if they're a high risk case. And the public shouldn't know. Being a suspected peadophile is socially just as bad as being one. Extremely unfair for people to be publicly shamed for a mental problem when they haven't done anything wrong. Their movements should just be monitored anonymously. If they're hanging around red zones like schools and parks constantly then that needs investigated. Along with some actual mental help if things like depression and crazy sex drives surely they can supress urges like that? Medication and therapy. |

Our government can fund into research to cure pedophilia since they have the money to spend on useless things like portraits, vacations, and foreign aid.. and let's not even talk about how they have free healthcare as politicians. |
