Yes, it happens. There's not much else to say here.

Edit: I don't really think this conversation will get anywhere when it's between one girl and like five guys.

To anyone who thinks there isn't that much sexism around today, read this story.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/29810908

This kind of thing happens all the time.
I read the headline and closed it because this has no place in this discussion because its just some idiot.

Well, there are certainly a lot of "just some idiots" out there. Plus, you said you've never seen anyone be sexist. Obviously not true.

Izanagi!

I was wondering; if a man opens a door for another man and says "after you, man" or "after you, dude", would it fall foul in the same way that "after you, ma'am" does?

He wouldn't have made sexist remarks if he wasn't an idiot. My point was that there are plenty of people like him out there. Headteachers, politicians, policemen, ect. I'm sorry that you don't want to believe it.

You don't find that a bit contradictory?
No. I enjoy seeing women naked, how does that equate to disrespecting women? I sure do not.
The point is that you're viewing them as objects for your viewing pleasure, and not people or equals. There's nothing really wrong with it if that's what you do, but the fact is that society views it as this, and relentlessly pushes the premise that image means everything; and that nothing else she can bring to the table really matters in that respect.

Any sane woman who respects herself doesn't want to be viewed by men exclusively by how big her tits are or how well she can twerk. Yet everywhere you look, that's all that women are personified by, and it makes most average women feel disrespected and inadequate.
And plenty of times with guys, since they're so used to seeing women in this way, they value a woman by these qualities, and not much more.

If you're a heavy set girl who isn't, by definition, "hot", it's quite difficult to motivate yourself to date guys because your appearance is all that they value about you, because that's how society has taught them to value women.

Girls value guys for appearance as well, but guys are usually valued by girls by their personality, not so much their appearance.

Some of the most prevalent men in society today are not attractive in the slightest, yet most women who are prevalent in society are attractive.

Kim Kardashian for example couldn't argue her way out of a wet paper bag, but she's prevalent because she's considered good looking. That's it. Nothing more.
But who cares about who a celebrity is? Does it really bother you that much that no ugly women are celebrity's? I mean really?

And just so you know, again, most men do care about a woman's personality and not what she looks like only. That's just something you guys have labeled men as and it's really not true except for some random idiots.

Also, it really isn't fair to play the "she doesn't have a chance because she's overweight" card. You can't just say that people should just date someone because of their personality even if they find them unattractive. It sucks, but I'm almost sure its been like that throughout history. Can't really do anything to change that.

By the way, I've noticed many girls talking about guys just like you are describing how men do it to women. It's childish to make it sound like a one-sided attack, because it just simply isn't.

Finally, complaining about how women are portrayed in ads is just quite stupid honestly. It's for making money, and I'm sure the women are being reimbursed for their "troubles" nicely. If they really cared about it, they wouldn't do it. Yes, that's possible. As for porn, well that's another debate that I really don't care for, so leave it out when talking to me.
It does bother me because what the f*ck does that say about our society? It says that women are only worth something if they're pretty.

Meanwhile, you can have men who don't look attractive, and are treated on the same level.

Adam Sandler is perhaps one of the ugliest guys in Hollywood, yet have you seen his damn salary?

If you don't care about the double standard, than you are a sexist.

I dare you to name one guy in Hollywood that's dating an ugly chick.

Mathew Broderick is married to Sarah Jessica Parker.

Ben Falcone is married to Melissa McCarthy.

I could go on. Also those are two successful women who aren't famous for being physically attractive. Their actor husbands aren't much to look at either.

That kind of stuff definitely happens. Watch this video. Although this will only happen in the trashy parts of town/trashy people.

Have to lol at "good evening" being counted as sexual harassment tho.

The real motive of street harassment is intimidation. To make its target scared or uncomfortable, and to make the harasser feel powerful. But what if there was a simple way to take that power away by exposing it? You can now use your smartphone to do just that by documenting, mapping, and sharing incidents of street harassment. Adele is one of the most successful music artists of the modern day, and is also someone who is heavy. Over here in the UK there's a comedian called Miranda Hart who is not attractive, but she's a pretty big deal over here. Bette Midler is a strange looking woman, but I hear she had a pretty good career. I can also name dozens and dozens of very attractive male celebrities, and there are multiple womens magazines where they highlight the fact that these men are attractive. It works both ways.

Also, doesn't it defeat the object of arguing for women to be judged on more than their appearance when you're asking us to look for 'ugly' women?

I think she meant it's more common to see an attractive woman with a less attractive guy than it is to see an attractive man with a less attractive woman, especially in Hollywood.

@master gohan: it would be ridiculous for someone to say "men first" when opening a door for a guy, but it's not ridiculous to say "ladies first."
