If you are a sexist, are you likely to be a racist too? If you are ignorant enough to be a sexist, you're probably going to be racist as well right? I mean has there ever been a sexist who thought "I don't have a problem with skin colours but women should stay at home where they belong" I don't see how you can be so ignorant about one and not the other since both attitudes require an equal amount of stupidity. |

I think it's natural to be weary of people who aren't like yourself. Whether or not it's racist or sexist (or whatever) is really ambiguous, and depends on the opinion of the person or the people being offended. Of course it's completely obvious if you're going around calling people racial slurs or harming them, whether or not that is considered "racism" is a given. I don't think there would be a "grey area" when it comes to whether or not it's racist. If you want to consider this weariness as either racism or sexism, everyone is sexist or racist to some degree. Racism and sexism are both born out of stereotypes and personal experience. I don't know if people who are racist are also sexist, but it is something to think about. The problem with this is that you're trying to find sound logic behind the actions of people who aren't using logic themselves. I would imagine there are people out there who are one but not the other. There's one person in particular I know who has never shown any signs of sexism in the decade-plus that I've known him, but has been known to make the odd racist remark. Sexism and racism are not just ignorance with no reason (even if the 'reasons' behind them are ignorant in themselves). Just because a person believes all people of the opposite sex should look and act the way they see fit, doesn't mean that they necessarily believe people of a different colour or culture should do the same. Am I saying it happens often? No, but it almost definitely happens. |

I've noticed that racists also tend to be homophobic, so I'm sure it's probable. My grandparents are racist and homophobic. They aren't what I would call "sexist," but they aren't exactly feminist either. |

I wouldn't doubt that Fangirl, but our grandparents were also raised during a different time. Due to this, I also wouldn't be surprised if your grandfather thinks of your grandmother as inferior to him. This isn't an attack on him, it's simply how people back then were raised. It was a different time and different culture. The men would be responsible for bringing in money and being heads of the house while the women would stay at home and be in charge of taking care of the kids and the house. Even most theistic religions promote men as superior to women. Something also worth mentioning is that there are plenty of people out there who promote feminism, but are incredibly sexist against men. They've essentially become the very ideal to which they where established to oppose. This also happened with Unions, which is why most Unions suck now. I think it's definitely a possibly. Never thought of it like that but an interesting concept. I would say someone who is racist is more likely to be sexist than someone who isn't racist. |

It's more of Asians are their s***ty driving. And yes, this is a stereotype that is true for the most part so I don't find it racist. |

Just like how women have less physique than men? I'm not sexist for saying that. Anyway, I've never heard of Asians being s*** drivers as scientifically supported. Sounds stupid tbh |

Yeah, I know. I was just mentioning the first example that came to mind. I went out to dinner with my grandparents a few days ago, and all my grandma did was talk about "blacks" and "the gays." I know of a few people in my generation who are like that, but not many. That may be because I tend to avoid those people. |

Related: how many generations do you think it'll take for bigotry to start becoming less of an issue? My grandparents are more 'old-fashioned' (a kind way of saying they're bigoted) than my parents, who are less so, but still more prone to bigotry than me and my two sisters. I imagine that's the case with a lot of people my age. Obviously there is still bigotry and discriminatory attitudes in people my age, but it's less than the generations before us. So I wonder whether in two generations time, will we live in a kinder society? |

Over time, my grandparents are becoming less bigoted because my parents are becoming less bigoted, and my parents are becoming less bigoted because we (my brother and I) are much less bigoted than they are. If that makes any sense. I'm sure the same will happen when we have children of our own. I think it will vary family to family, but in a couple more generations I don't think we'll see much racism or homophobia anymore. I actually think the hardest to get rid of will be sexism because our society still enforces it in a lot of ways. The media is becoming more and more culture/sexuality friendly; however, sexism has managed to prevail for centuries and is still very heavy in various forms of media. We still see over-sexualized women in the media, inaccurate portrayals of men and women, and impossible standards for men and women in our society. It hasn't changed much to be honest. I'm sick and high on medicine for my cold, so I hope I articulated that well enough.

Sexism and Racism don't really go in hand. They're both ignorance based on certain aspects of a person that are uncontrollable, but to say they're linked in any deep way would mean that you're saying that somebody who's ignorant in one way is ignorant in every other possible way. |

Yes. Society has been on that path for centuries. Five hundred years ago women were considered to be their husband's property. The only people with any rights were the aristocracy. Thing is, nobody ever thinks they are bigots at the time. It's only later that we realise how unfair we were being. I wonder what we will be criticised for in the future? "How come people in the 21st century couldn't just pay women equally?" |
