Not everyone carries cash in their pockets all the time. And sometimes when you hand cash to a store owner, you can also end up being unsure whether or not you paid for an item later. And sometimes cash can fall away very easily and the item ends up getting stolen in the end. I think that if all local stores start accepting debit/credit cards, it would also reduce robbery. What do you guys think? It's time to end put an end to the cash registry machines and start using the modern card machines that accept both cards and cash.

It has to do with credit card company fees. Credit Card Companies charge a $2 fee to the business every time a debit or credit card is swiped, and small local stores who only sell convenient items to locals can't afford to pay the fees if all their customers are only buying $1.50-$4 worth of stuff. Big corporations can afford to pay the difference. This is why you can go to McDonald's and buy a cheeseburger, and put it on your debit card. The local mom-and-pop store near me does debit/credit, but they don't allow it if your total is under $5. If you used your card to only buy a drink that costs $1.50, they don't even make any money at all because of the fee. Edited by Ketchup Revenge, Oct 28 2014, 11:34 PM.

Yea, it's fairly rare, but it does happen. |

My local pizzeria doesn't accept debit/credit. It's like the only place in my town that doesn't. It's annoying cause I don't always have cash, but its cheap and its damn good pizza so they win. |

The cheap prices are probably why they don't accept them. If they're selling mostly slices, for $2-$3 each, they're not going to allow debit card use because it costs them a $2 fee from the credit card company every time a card is swiped. |

I think there may be a Chinese restaurant around town that only accepts cash or checks, now that I think about it... Checks over credit. So weird. |

That's weird, I know tons of delis that don't accept CC. Apart from that mostly everything is starting to accept card (with minimum if they're small). |

Here in Aus it's pretty rare that a place won't have EFTPOS (same thing as debit/credit cards) but occasionally some small cafe's and such don't. Even then I can think of maybe 1 or 2 places I've been to in the last year that haven't had it. What's more common is a $5 or $10 minimum or 50c surcharge for use. |

Yeah, almost every place where I live accepts card. The smaller shops tend to have a minimum spend (usually around £5) to cancel out the card payment fee Ketchup mentioned. |

Is it bad that I don't know what this "card payment fee" is? |

The fee is what the card companies charge businesses for taking payments via their cards. I assume the fee varies by company, but I think it's around £1 per transaction here in the UK. I only know about it because I used to be friendly with the local comic book shop owner, and he explained it to me during a conversation about why he prefers cash over card with smaller payments. |

That's odd because dollar tree allows me to use my card on 1 dollar purchases. Guess allowing use of cards offsets the loss here. |

Dollar Tree is also a fairly good sized franchise. They can afford to pay the difference because not everyone is only spending $1 when they go there. It's the single mom-and-pop shops or local restaurants that can't afford to pay the difference. Edited by Ketchup Revenge, Oct 29 2014, 04:14 PM.
