What makes you a bad driver?

We can talk about how bad people are at driving for a variety of different reasons, but what really makes someone a bad driver?

I'll admit it, I speed a lot. I hate driving slow, and driving faster seems to keep my mind more focused on the road. Plus it's fun. But I always use my blinker, I don't cut people off, I'm considerate of other drivers, etc. Unless I'm in some terrible mood, I'm a pretty safe driver. What bothers me is extremely slow drivers who can't seem to find their blinker and hold up other people by chilling in the passing lane. It's the passing lane for a reason, isn't it? And when you're in a hurry and get behind them, they act like you're the one in the wrong because you'd like to use the lane for passing, not meandering. That's my number one pet peeve.

What about you guys?

Things that make you bad:

-If you can't stay in your lane.
-If you drive under the speed limit.
-If you stall traffic by driving an equal speed to the car in the lane next to you.
-If you suck.

THIS.^ Especially the first point.

I agree about the passing lane (the "fast lane" to me). It's called that for a reason. I'm not sure about your location, but it's actually illegal to hold up traffic in that lane here, not that people really know that; I wish they did. If someone is coming up behind you, you switch to the next lane—you don't stay steady like nothing's happening. It doesn't matter if you're already going 75mph and the speed limit is only 60mph. If someone is going 90mph you get the f*** out of the way and let them pass, then move back over if it's safe. I am so sick of people who think each lane is equal. No, they're not and they were not designed that way. The left is the passing lane, the middle is more or less neutral, and the right lane is for the slow(er) drivers (hence why the emergency lane is normally located on the right and slow-moving vehicles like big trucks and semis are instructed to stay to the right).

I go fast, admittedly. It maddens me to drive slow. On the freeway my go-to speed is 70-75mph, with the speed limits being 50-60mph locally. When I'm going that fast and someone is lolligagging at 50mph in the fast lane, my road rage gets pretty bad. I don't abuse it though. If I'm going 70mph and I come up to someone who's also going about the same speed, I don't push for them to get out of my way. I adapt and give them enough space and be on my way.

Turn signals are another thing that pisses me off. It's ridiculous how many times I've been stuck at a stop sign or stop light behind a guy who waits until the last possible second—or better yet, when he's already in the process of turning!—to put their signal on. For instance, it's a four-lane road, heavy traffic; I pull up behind a guy in the left lane thinking he's just going straight like I am, but instead he puts his signal on as he's inching his way into the intersection, so now I have to sit there and wait for his stupid a*** because the traffic in the other lane is preventing me from simply moving around him. This is beyond dangerous on the freeway. I encounter so many people that wait until they're halfway into the next lane before even bothering to put their signal on. Like, really? It's a little late at that point, a*****.

Tailgating is pretty bad here too, especially by a certain group of people who like to drive around in their huge trucks with temporary license plates, huge chrome rims, and blacked out windows. I've almost been run off the road by these fools a couple times, and not on the freeway, on regular residential streets.

I'm incredibly passionate about driving (and cars in general). It's my escape from the stress of life. If I'm having a terrible day, I'll go and drive for a little while. I don't believe I'm a bad driver either. I use my signals at all appropriate times, even if I'm making a quick swerve around someone who's turning in the intersection or when I'm turning into my driveway, and I don't cut people off or tailgate. I brake early and I give at least a car's worth of space at stop lights for the most part.

I really wish they'd impose a mandatory re-certification for driving licenses. Every couple of years wouldn't be a huge burden. So many people do not have the courtesy, skill, or deserve to be on the road. I don't know how some even got a license in the first place. Not that having one stops people from driving, as I've learned on the job....

I guess I went on a rant about people being bad drivers for a variety of reasons, but the bottom line is safety. I know that sounds hypocritical coming from a chronic speeder like myself, but I honestly don't view speeding as bad as driving too slow.[1] All of the things I mentioned above lead to being an unsafe or inconvenient driver, and I consider that a bad driver. I understand people who don't feel the need to exceed the speed limit, and that's fine—so long as they're in the correct lane. But if you can't use signals or don't know common courtesy while driving, please stay off the road. It makes life a lot easier and less expensive for the rest of us.

You guys covered most of it but a big problem for me is people using there highbeams all the time at night. Since i drive a lot at night, this happens a lot and my eyes start to hurt sometimes
So thats one of my biggest problems with drivers. Another would be giving no indicator
Which is just dumb, its so easy to do and makes a HUGE difference but damn people are lazy. And laslty random people going slow or just stopping a lot, i understand if ur in a new area or looking for a speicifc house ect...But stopping a lot when theres nothing but road is just dumb

On that point, I'd rather have people overusing their high beams than not using their headlights at all, which is another stupid problem here. Is it so difficult to turn the nob or whatever to turn your headlights on so other people can see you at night, or so you can see where you're going? That's just stupid. I appreciate people who flash their high beams at me when I don't have my headlights all the way on. At least they care.

Not properly understanding the road signs or which lanes you should be in.

Maybe this is stupid and harsh but I think if you fail your test five times then that should be it.

When you don't signal, don't do regular mirror checks, don't understand who gets the right away, when you drink and drive, when you text and drive. When you just drive using plain stupidity.

If people are using them right you shouldn't even see people using their high beams, you aren't supposed to use them when there's traffic coming towards you or in front of you generally, that's dangerous as f***, those lights pretty much blind you.

As for the passing lane thing, I agree to an extent. If I'm in that lane going the limit or just over and someone comes up to me with speed, I usually just pull over in to the other lane and let them go. I'm not usually in that lane much anyway unless I have a turn coming up or passing someone myself. If you want to speed that's your business, you know the risks and I hope to god you don't do it in heavy residential areas.

However, occasionally someone really annoys me. Sometimes you can't move right away and some people don't like that and tailgate, flash lights, beep the horn. If someone does that I become pretty vindictive and will do anything I can to piss them off. My usual go to move is to match the speed of a car in the other lane so they can't get past. Nothing dangerous of course, I've seen people jumping lanes and stuff not letting someone past, which is stupid. But if I can hold up that a***** behind me a bit? Yeah, I'll probably do it. Seeing their anger brings a smile to my face.

Indicating here is pretty bad too but that's a common complaint everywhere.

Merging is a massive issue too. People are too eager to get in front. You'll be coming up to the lane and someone will put their foot down to get ahead of you. That's not how it works. If someone is ahead of you when you get to the lane they get in first. It got so bad that the local police released a video about how to merge:

@Copy

Just the other night I was in the passing lane and some dude flew up behind me and started tailgating me because I wasn't passing the car next to me fast enough. It was night time, so he started flashing his brights at me and blinding me. I purposely went slow passing the other car to piss him off. Idiot driver.

Merging would be a lot easier if people weren't pretentious a***** about it. The people already on the freeway aren't hurt by letting every other person in, and people trying to merge shouldn't force their way in or get way too eager. That's an easy way of getting sideswiped.

Purposely slowing down to piss someone off isn't the best way of going about it. You're becoming a traffic hazard in the process, and you have no idea who that person is or what they're capable of. For all you know they could have a gun.

People who take the slowest f***ing turns. They take literally 10 seconds to make an easy right turn, it takes me all of 3 seconds, like what the f***.

People who don't signal.

I speed a lot too, probably bad for a driver like me who has only been driving for about 8 months, but I still consider myself better than a lot of people. My only problem is I don't know whats acceptable speeds on highways and such. I go 70-75 on a 50 speed limit so IDK.

And I can't stand slow drivers. If they are being slow and we are at a light, I'll just honk them right as the light turns green cause I know they'll be annoyed.

If I could, and have all expenses paid, I'd smash slow drivers' cars and hopefully break a bone.

Maybe I do have a problem though, I go 40 everywhere so anything is considered slow for me. If I'm going 25, I'll go nuts, its just too slow. Counting down the days before I have to pay that 100 dollar speeding ticket.

As far as acceptable speeds go, I would say no more than 65 or 70 on a 55 and 75-80 on a 65. I go faster sometimes. But it's ridiculous to go 75+ on a 55 unless you're just really wanting a ticket.
