Hi there, I'm making this topic because I don't agree with Charles Darwin being at #1 in the "Discovery Channel - Top Ten Discoveries". Don't get me wrong, I love Darwin's theory and his ideas, but disagree with him being at #1 with the theory of evolution. I think Einstein's theory of General relativity deserves #1 spot because of; 1. Brilliant and simple explanation of gravity that changed the idea of how scientists and everyday people view the world. 2. Einstein's idea is still relevant in today's physics where you have Scientists - Alan Guth, Lawrence Krauss, Witten, Steven Weinberg and Stephen Hawking all try to create new ideas such as M-theory or quantum gravity that incorporates Einstein's theory. 3. Einstein still had a vital role (Photoelectric effect) to play in the most successful theory to mankind - quantum mechanics. Anyway, in your opinion what do you think is the most successful theory and do you agree with the top ten list by Discovery Channel? Edited by olliebalollie, Oct 21 2014, 01:19 AM.

Yeah that's bulls*** putting Darwin at number one. I'm not sure how knowledge of evolutionary science actually helps mankind. Especially his basic understanding of the facts which have been greatly expanded upon by much better scientists than he was. Einstein is the second most important scientist in history next to Newton. If anyone says Stephen Hawking, well a scientist on tv reckoned that he wasn't even one of the top ten most important scientists alive today, let alone of all time. I think that the internet is the greatest invention however. It made the world incredibly tiny over a very short period of time and things can now be achieved almost instantly when in the past they might take several weeks. |

5. Cloning - Hot slag, cloning! The ethics? Yeah that's a thing, but it generates a whole new set of possibilities for medical science. Can you imagine cloning a whole new set of functioning organs for yourself? Heart, liver, kidney transplants? I guess I'm getting into stem cells, which once again, ethics and such, but still spectacular. 4. The Internet. Pel is right, the Internet is spectacular. All the world's information at your fingertips? Anywhere? Brilliant! 3. The Airplane/powered flight Thank the Wrights! I love being in the air, I love the Sky, and I love being able to get from point A to B in a straight line. It's also nice to be able to get anywhere on Earth within a day. At a fairly low cost all things considered. Don't like the snow in Canada? Hop a plane to Fiji and warm up! The Sahara too Sunny? Meet some sweet ski bunnies in Sweden! I know I would ![]() 2. The large hadron collider. Holy slag, we can replicate the densest matter in the universe with this thing? And theoretically generate faster than light tachyon particles? I love the theory of relativity, but we have a machine that says Einstein is wrong! Never thought I'd say that in my lifetime! I love science! 1. Cold fusio- wait we don't have that yet? 1. time displa- we don't have that either? What else do we have? 1. Electricity Ok, none of anything on my list would be possible without this stuff! Personally I think I have a rather electric personality, which has nothing to do with electricity, but I feel like it gives me a certain affinity for it. I just love it! So much fun, it's a flexible powersource, and the process of electrons moving is just exciting within of itself (Look for the engineering joke in there lol) whether you're a proponent of The Serbian Scientist or a believer in the Wizard of Menlow, you gotta know electricity is where it's at. |

I like your list If this is going to be about importance, then the transistor should be near the top. Nearly everything (electronics) that we have today owe it's existence to the transistor. I want to reply to your comment about Einstein being wrong. We have to revise the famous statement "Nothing can go faster than the speed of light." Now, what we have to say is "No useable information can travel faster than the speed of light." So in some sense Einstein still has the last laugh. |

The hadron collider incident was proven an error. There was dirt in the machine or something. There's still nothing we know of that surpasses light speed. |

Evolution might not be worthy of number one but it definitely belongs on the list. Evolution has helped us understand the world to a much larger extend. Its completely changed the way we view the world. |

1. really man? 19th-21st century discoveries... And your #1 is video game consoles??? 2. Sure, especially the internet part. 3. Doesn't this fall under internet??? 4. Is that so? I'd like a source for that... I don't think anyone can time travel yet. 5. It's actually still under heavy debate in America. I think equal rights for blacks or equal rights for women has been way more important. |

i read this post on the train and i laughed since one of my last posts on this forum was something like "incest -- fun for the whole family" anywayyyyyyyy, i liked his post cuz 1 of all it made me laugh and 2 of all vidya brings ppl together and i think it's p cool that human technology's advanced to the point where it isnt just about survival or making life easier, but we can actually spend a lot of time f***ing around on vidya. hell, i've met some of my closest friends via online games (e.g., peep) and i count them as close as my offline friends. i'm wondering if videogames counts as a discovery since they were invented; a discovery is something that something already exists and is detected, whereas an invention is using s*** (materials, theories, whatever) to create something that doesnt exist already.
regarding darwin's theory of evolution via natural selection: think about its implications in medicine. VACCINES????? designing drugs?????? evolving bacteria anyone????? their resistance to antibiotics?? massive impact on religion (rejected p much all of creationism) and morals (we're still animals regardless of how far we've come) idk if there are other topics that unify biology, but darwin's theory of evolution via natural selection is one of them. genetics as a field probably wouldnt even be around, or if it was then it'd be completely different. think about how much impact that's had on society and other fields. no impact on mankind my arse. edit: just a lil tidbit of information: the theory of evolution wasnt darwin's. there were other scientists at the time who'd already come to the same conclusion. the theory of evolution via natural selection is what darwin's famous for. I don't think theory of evolution has much to do with that stuff. I think that the discovery of dna is much more significant. Vaccination was discovered before Darwin was even born by the way so cross that one off your list too. |

Evolution was discovered before DNA, before we had any knowledge on genetics. Evolution gave us the idea that DNA could exist, its discovery took place way earlier because of evolution. |

and what do viruses and bacteria do? evolve. hence why for some illnesses such as the flu new vaccines have to be created every year to fight againts new strains. vaccines cant even be made against a lot of viruses, but they can still be observed and scientists can see how they evolve in order to better understand the virus. edit: no opinion on DNA since i see the two as supplementary rather than in opposition of each other.
