Do we still need armies?

Air forces, navies and armies. Do we still need them? Would our countries be just as safe without them?

I honestly have no clue. I find the idea of an army quite archaic. On the other hand I have no idea how much they actually do to keep us safe in our beds at night. So perhaps they are needed for all I know? I wonder how much extra money could be invested in the economy if we didn't have them? Perhaps our taxes would be a bit lower too? I dunno, thoughts, opinions?

If no country in the world had any armies, then sure. But if one country stopped having an army and every other country had one, that would be idiotic.

There is no way to make every country disband it's army. So therefore, to protect itself from any attacks, a country needs an army. There will always be a threat out there for a nation.

Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

Yes.

If not just because anything could cause mass riots and the police wouldn't be able to handle it alone unless there was as many police officers as soldiers...but then the police are just an army anyway

What we don't need is constant war, however we need to stop people starting wars.

Like if all armies just came home and left countries with terrorists etc to their own devices they'd build up and invade.
So if people like that would just stop...

Imagine how much better off the world would be.
Places like Syria wouldn't be getting bombed, the economy back home wouldn't be paying for it, soldiers could focus on humanitarian work etc

But they'd still be needed, if there was ever anything like a viral outbreak, natural disaster or worldwide EMP we'd need armies to keep people under control.
And also to do the dirty jobs in that situation like genocide, if everyone was starving because there wasn't enough food for billions of people for the whole race to survive people would need to be killed.
Police and civilians aren't really equipped for that kind of thing.

They definitely have their place in the world but they shouldn't have to be fighting constantly for stupid reasons like religion.

I think a simple way to look at it is, just imagine what would happen if your country no longer had a military. Considering what's going on in this world, you would probably become a target of terrorism.

Yeah but terrorism is usually dealt with easily by the police rather than the army.

Really? Maybe terrorism from someone who was living in their country, though outside terrorist threats are beyond the police's reach.

No

it's archaic because humans have fought wars w/ each other since f*** knows when which is still happening today.

"Would our countries be just as safe without them?"

probably not. the fact that the rest of the world know that the US have overall best army in the world because of the amount of budget their military receives and can pump into technology is probably a big deterrence to any would-be invaders.
same w/ the UK and im assuming canada and australia (altho to be fair idk much about theirs so i'm just assuming here) -- our armed forces are small compared to other nations' armies and our technology is behind US technology, but we arguably have the best trained army in the world soldier for soldier even compared to the US, and also arguably the best special forces (british SAS). i mean theyre pretty much the blueprint for every other special forces unit in the world. that and we're an island nation.
