So I've noticed this on Steam a few times now and it's got me curious.

There are a ton of different options to purchase and I don't know which one is the best value for money. I don't really want to shell out £50 for one.

Secondly are you allowed to make a profit from your creations?

Thirdly, is it relatively straight forward to use? Can you add your own source code to the engine?

You can make money off your creations. And it's very easy to use in general... but it will take a bit of work to create something outside of the intended scope (though luckily many other users have already created code packs for download).

More detailed reply when I'm not taking a #2 at work.

What's the most basic, vanilla version?

Umm, RPG Maker VX Ace is the "current" version. XP is the old one (like... I think I used to use it way back in 2005?).

I'd suggest getting RPG Maker VX Ace Lite (free) and waiting until VX Ace itself comes on special. It happens like twice a year... 66% off usually.

There's a few restrictions on Lite (most importantly you cannot make money off anything produced in it) but it would give you a good taste of what's on offer.

Anything else tagged "RPG Maker" will simply be an addon of some sort... like music, or tilesets, or sprites, or scripts.

EDIT: Here's a quote from the XP reviews on Steam
Quote:

The differences between this version and the newer version are:
+ price(compared to VX Ace)
- default resource map content less versatile(compared to VX Ace)
- smallest map size larger than smallest map size available on newest version(VX Ace)
+ Android compatibility(google play has an application that runs files from RPG Maker XP version)
- no Character Generator
- no Shadow Pencil
- no Region Edit mode
- no 1/8 map button display
- no by default facial closeups when speaking to a character(compared to VX Ace)
- scripting is version Ruby GSS 1, VX version is Ruby GSS 3
- no right click quick transfer option (map to map connections... neccessary to do it the long way each time)
- no video imports?(haven't tested this yet, but the reason I got VX Ace was because it could bring in video files - videos for storyline or whatever else - Ogg format)

Other than all that... it works. Android compatibility is something to think about.
I have no way to confirm if any of this is true... but there it is.

By lite do you mean the free trial? Will that still offer me enough content to be able to learn how to use the software and create advanced projects?

RPG Maker VX Ace Lite seems to be the free trial version, yes. I've read that, although as with any free trial there are restrictions, it's very usable (in terms of practice, not production).

Have a go with it, and if you like the taste, let me know.... I think I have a spare Steam key lying around somewhere... probably...

Downloaded the free trial. Doesn't seem like they left anything out that's in the full version. It just has a time limit of 30 days.

If you ended up liking this... RPG Maker VX Ace is currently on sale on Steam for US$17.50 (75% off).... for the next 12 hours.

RPG Maker XP is also on there for a little over US$6 if you were interested in that (same thing: 12 hours).

Ah, nostalgia. I recall using RPG Maker VX once and there being an error in the script concerning division iirc; other than that, I had a solid experience. I enjoyed the community: the differenet spriters, tutorials on how to make decent maps and the like. You could lose hours just studying up.

The transparent-house approach was convenient as to not have to have a new map for each house you entered.

Good look with RPG Maker, Pelador!

To anyone interested: RPG Maker VX Ace is now on special on the Humble Store for US$17.49 (for the next 5 days or so).

NOTE: Humble Store purchases are generally redeemable as Steam keys (they usually make note if they are not).
