Just wondering why there's two sports with the same name. BQ: Is Soccer pronounced Futbol or Football? I hear both from multiple races. Never thought I'll talk about sports. Besides non contact sports that is. |

They are all technically called football. American football's proper name is actually Gridiron Football. The word soccer came from English cavaliers who had emigrated to America. It was a term they invented back at Oxford and Cambridge university in England the same as how rugger is used for rugby. The words soccer and football are both correct, so feel free to use what you wish. The pronounciation of football depends where you come from but people in England generally pronounce it as football. Although people in the east will generally pronounce it footbull because of their accents. Edited by Pelador, Sep 21 2014, 01:06 AM.

All one word I suppose. Of course no one calls in that anymore. That's just the technical name for it apparently. There's also rugby football and association football which is soccer. Then there's Irish football and Australian football. You see what happened was that the sport was played around different parts of the world before any official rules were invented so everyone ended up with their own variety. Soccer is short for association football. Futbol is the latin way of saying it. |

Australian Football is very... different. I don't think it can be explained. |

Just so happened that they were called the same thing. No explanation really. Why are those two kids both named Alex? I don't know. |

The one Alex is the original Alex and the other Alex is a bleak copy. They are both good, but one is older. |

For all those wondering the answer to this question - I have the answer. Football (Soccer) is called football because you use your feet to kick the ball (obviously). Football (American Football) is called football because the ball you use to play is a foot long. |

So it's just a coincidence that an NFL ball is about a foot long then? |
