My Dear Melancholy,

I'm..sure Funimation was... proud of that rap. I don't want to comment on it. I'm a positive person. Just... never mention it again. Even though Funimation was clearly trolling. I don't know who. But they did.

The Blue Water opening used Dan Dan's theme but changed the lyrics to suit the theme of DBGT and not a love song lol. Still, gotta love Dan Dan, arguably the best DB opening.

As for the Rap.....I don't even know. Maybe the producers over at FUNi were high when they decided they were going to use the Rap theme.

Funimation simply made a lot of bad decisions back in the day.

Well, Rock the Dragon wasn't all that bad. It was only this theme that was terrible IMO.

The GT rap wasn't good at all, but I do like Rock the Dragon.

The Last GT Fighter

Lmao I'm the only one ever who liked Step Into the Grandtour. I just felt it fit the tone of the show better. It was dark, violent, edgy. GT is fun, but it gets dark and gritty too. It's off putting to hear "Dan Dan" and then go straight to a shot of Super 17 eviscerating the GT fighters with his machine guns.

The GT rap sounds like one of those forced attempts to be "edgy" and appeal to a younger demographic (Funimation did that sort of thing a few times in their dub). Dan Dan Kokoro may not fit very well with the series, but it's still a very good song.

My Dear Melancholy,

Basic info:
English Dub w/ subtitles and original BGM
I'm using the GT box set.
1 episode a week for Super 17 and 2 episode a week for the Dragons!

So I've only done one review before so I probably going be bad at it. Let's begin!

Episode 41: Curtain Call

Before we start. What's a Curtain Call? Can someone please tell me Lol? I vastly prefer the Japanese title of the episode. Curtain Call.... Now I'm going be thinking all night about this.

Okay it's the 31st World Tournament. Tenkaichi Budokai in the subs. I wish we heard that more in dubs. Sounds more Dragonball. I went back and watched this episode twice. I love Funimation and their hard work. But why in 2004 were they still changing BGM? I love the effort (lack of) but it honestly feels like a loop track played in the background until the episode was over. If Db Wikia is correct the same guy did the replacement tracks for some of the movies. He was amazing there. I love his Gogeta theme. But his GT work. Lots of lazy effort. Funimation shouldn't have never changed it. I normally don't rant so I'm sorry. Just boggles my mind that he went from kick a*** music to .....loop tracks. Are DBGT haters from the dub? Nothing plot wise to hate on. So my theory is the music. Anyone can support me?

I ramble on. Let's do a quick summary. Translation. It's copy and paste time! Just like my school papers! .....I promise I don't suck and humor in real life.

Krillin arrives and asks Goku why he did not inform them he was in the junior division, he says he did not know and has a flashback.

In the flashback, Goku asks Mr. Satan why is he fighting in the junior division and why is Pan in the adult division. Mr. Satan claims that there is a height limit and Goku’s height is just a bit short. Goku believes him, but then Krillin says the real reason Goku was excluded was so Pan could become the new champion so Mr. Satan could keep the championship in the family.

Lmao. This episode sounds like Toriyama made it. Toei doesn't get enough credit. People just love to give Toei a hard time. Toei didn't make the Super Saiyan Rainbow like fanfiction tends to do. Cut them slack. They understand Toriyama style. In..most cases...

Mr. Satan is deciding to call it quits because Majin Buu is no longer there to help him become a better fighter.

I was going to skip alot of this gag episode. But I picked up on this and HAD to talk about it. This is a very very interesting plot point. You can say Buu is the reason for Hercule's reason to live. Hercule Mark Satan lives for fighting fame. He's famous. But when Boo dies he calls a quits? That's very interesting. Unique. I'll say that it's a major plot point. I know many like myself disregard GT and don't believe it's canon. But for something that's in my opinion non canon, it's a brilliant plot point. It saddens me that people refuse to pay attention to DBGT even when it makes awesome plots such as this one and Hero's Legacy.

Goku and Vegeta rivalry was shown here in this one episode than most of Dragonball Z. Why do people ignore this? If it truly gets worst as many friends told me. Why ignore the first half? Just my question. I'm such a defender xD. I always defend things people bash. I'm to positive at times. I admit to flaws but some fans just conveniently don't mind mention the good in certain anime. I've never bash an anime before as I've seen many bad fan ideas that are very unique but can't be taken seriously. Back on topic. Goku loses via distraction. Vegeta punches the wall in anger as he can't fight Goku now. Which confused me because he can't just fly to go and challenge him to a fight. He had about 15 - 20 years to do this. Vegeta not a smart prince I see.

Uub or Oob(I was informed this is an alt. Spelling) is in disguise. I won't attempt at spelling his fake name. That's a lot of work. I had a nickname but it's inappropriate. It's has the "N" word in it. I probably missed it but why was Uub in disguised? Why doesn't Uub know to let Satan win? Did Goku not teach him!? Goku a bad teacher. >=[. Uub beats up Satan. That's mean of him. He really beats him up. Why? Why!? Thank you Majin Buu for correcting Uub. Wonder why he looks sad though. Uub came in second which still gets the $$$$$$$. Everyone talks to Uub. I'll make the joke later. But a certain character is missing which is funny. Even funnier if you know who I'm talking about.

As everyone heads back to West City, Vegeta and Goku decide to fight on a bridge, but when Goku's stomach growls causing him to lose his strength Vegeta laughs and they decide to push it off until later(Never), but the narrator ends the episode saying that a new evil force is looming.

Super 17 coming! I hope so. His design looks cool and I'm sure Toei will do a great job on him. But the length of the saga is 4 episodes. I don't know if it's a DB wika error or Toei don't like Androids. I hope it's not rushed.

Got some quick notes and trivia here:
Wow did the announcer aged. He got Lebron James hairline. That isn't attractive. I want to touch his forehead. Looks soft.....I'm a weirdo.

The quality looks great. I prefer if Dragonball got one but where's the Bluray for GT?

I miss Adult Goku. Watching Hero's Legacy made me realize Goku is funnier as an Adult.

Major probs to Nozawa. Her kid Goku and Ssj4 Goku doesn't sound alike. From the scenes I watched in Japanese.

I heard Sean Schimmel hates GT. Stephen Nadolony took his paycheck. I'm not a comedian. But that joke is something to think about. How was Sean's paycheck compare to Z? Stephen got major roles in almost all episodes of the Dragonball franchise. Second to Chris Sabat. Sean however had Adult and Teen Goku. In GT he only talks when SSJ4 appears.

We need a room :p . But Goken's husband Goten didn't appear. Goten is kinda irrelevant without fusion. I love him as much as the other Z fighters but he debut far to late to have anything major. Trunks has Future Trunks so he'll always be a popular name. But Goten. Sorry baby but GT said FU to Gotenks thus making Goten useless.

Time for my grading system.

Plot: No grade. It's a throw away episode. Just have fun watching it. This doesn't hold a candle to the driving episode but you can't strike gold all the time.

Music: B+. The music was fun and exciting. Nothing to download onto my iPod though. Enough for a enjoyable BGM though. I use DBGT bgm in my fanfiction. Just a cheap plug.

Characters: Mr.Satan was the focus character here. Instantly an A+. He grow as a character. The other characters were just bodies

Consistency: Besides Vegeta having all the time in the world to fight Goku. I'll say everything seems okay.

Overall: B

Enjoyment: B. Just a fun throw away episode that constantly gets overlooked. Makes me sad because it has excellent plot points.

That'll be all for this week. I'll update this thread again on Sunday. I got behind. I started watching Walking Dead and still got to catch up to Doctor Who. Should be on track by Friday. Still don't understand DBGT hate but maybe I'll see that in the next few episodes.

These are my thoughts on Dragon Ball GT:
On paper, GT has a really interesting plot. Unfortunately, the plot suffers a few inconsistencies and just plain bad writing. For starters, the Black-Star dragon balls are never discussed in Dragon Ball Z, nor do they ever appear on dragon radar. Secondly, how would Pilaf have learned about these Black-Star dragon balls? Putting that aside, the first handful of episodes in Dragon Ball GT are really well done. The whole situation on Planet Imegga was interesting, and the minor antagonist, Ledric, was cool. After this though, we come across Zunama, which has the completely unnecessary subplot with Trunks dressing up like a bride, to get married to this catfish-like creature that can supposedly create Earthquakes with his whiskers. It was a rather cringe-worthy experience. The same goes for the Para Brothers. They essentially stole the dragon balls from Goku, Pan, and Trunks, by… dancing… what? After that, they come across the subplot with Dr. Myuu trying to finish his Luud project, which wasn’t a particularly interesting experience, not to mention the design of Luud was incredibly lazy and stupid looking. He just looks like a robot baby. After this though, the plot starts to pick back up with the visit to planet M-2. Honestly, the beginning of this section all the way to the end of the Bebi arc was fairly competent to say the least, but even the most competent part of GT isn’t without it’s problems. For starters, why is Gohan a Super Saiyajin?

Last I checked, Gohan has his potential unlocked by Elder Kaioshin, and couldn’t, or at least shouldn’t, turn into a Super Saiyajin because all of his potential was shoved into his base form. I wouldn’t mind this as much if it was at least explained, but it’s never addressed, it’s not even explained in the guidebooks accompanying GT, the GT Perfect Files. Secondly, we have a minor power scaling issue. We see base Gohan putting up a fight with SSJ Bebi Goten. Later we see SSJ Bebi Gohan losing to SSJ Vegeta. As soon as Goten jumps in, it makes a world of difference, even though the difference between Gohan and Goten should be so large, Goten’s assistance should amount to nothing. My biggest problem with the Bebi arc though, is that this marks the beginning of the outright disposal of Uub. You still see him in later arcs trying to help out, but he was supposed to be a big deal according the end of Dragon Ball Z, and GT treats him like trash. After this, SSJ4 Goku and Golden Oozaru Bebi Vegeta engage in their fight. Problem with this fight is that there were plenty of opportunities for Goku to remove Bebi Vegeta’s tail. It was a cool fight, but in all seriousness, it could have been ended much quicker. Moving on to the Super 17 arc, my biggest problem with this arc is that it’s essentially a rehash of the Fusion Reborn movie, only with Super 17 as the main villain as opposed to Janenba. Honestly, I could argue that Bebi was a retread of Hatchiyack. This is also the point where GT adopts the title of Goku Time, because only Goku can do anything to the main villain, until SSJ4 Vegeta shows up, and even then he’s only fusion material. My last problem involving this arc is that Goku seems a bit more foolish than usual. Yeah, a trait of his character is that he isn’t too bright, but he’s still a fighting genius.

I’m pretty sure Goku from Z would have noticed that Super 17 was absorbing his attacks. Finally the Shadow Dragon arc introduces a number of problems I have with GT, which is unfortunate as this was probably the most interesting concept. The majority of the Shadow Dragons with either anticlimactically defeated and or had fairly lackluster designs. Beyond that, only Pan and Goku are fighting these things. Why is that? They made it clear that a number of these Shadow Dragons were weak, so why not have everyone take on a Dragon? The last problem I have with this arc specifically is that it ends with another Genki Dama. The Genki Dama ending cool the first time, but an unnecessary retread like this was well…. unnecessary. A fused character has never claimed a victory outside the Fusion Reborn movie, so it would have been a unique ending in this case. The last point I want to make is that almost all of Dragon Ball GT feels familiar, without the charm of it’s predecessors. The hunt for the Black-Star Dragon Balls is a throwback to the original Dragon Ball. The Bebi arc is a throwback to the Plan to Eradicate the Saiyajins film. Dr. Myuu is Dr. Raichi and Hatchiyack is Bebi. The Super 17 arc is a retread of the Fusion Reborn film. Only the Shadow Dragons feel unique, but even the end of that is a retread of the ending to the Majin Buu arc. Like most people will tell you; Dragon Ball GT has a lot interesting ideas, but doesn't execute them well.

With all this said though, a lot of these minor annoyances in the grand scheme of things, and GT still has a lot going for it. For starters, the Japanese soundtrack is phenomenal. It's probably the best OST of the Dragon Ball trilogy. Super Saiyajin 4 also has a really great design. Ignoring Toriyama's comment about how tails are considered inferior, this is also a really genius ascension. It comes completely full circle by combining Super Saiyajin with the Oozaru state, making for a power neither side could attain without the other. Something else I really like about GT is the dynamic of Si Xing Long and San Xing Long. When you think about it, these 2 form a genius symbolism:
San Xing Long: A cold and calculated personality, ready to do anything to win.
Si Xing Long: A warm-hearted individual, who has a hot passion for battle.
I also really loved the what became of Pan and Trunks in this series. Their characters were really well developed. Overall, I woulds grant GT a 6 out of 10.
