"Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the war room!"

Just to start things, I'm going to post this article.

A cop who was texting and driving hit and killed a former Napster exec... and was acquitted of any wrong doing because "it is legal for cops to text and drive sometimes". The text being answered was a text from another cop, but the same cop was texting his wife not too long before.

Cop kills former Napster exec

What are your thoughts on double standard laws for cops vs. civilians in general?

I think texting while driving is stupid no matter what the purpose was. Whether your texting your wife or your texting the chief of police to send in reinforcement to stop the terrorist attack, you're going to have your eyes off the road in both cases.

You know this may be hard, I mean it takes some skill I suppose but you can always...pull off the road...and then start texting.

It has been proven that texting and driving reduces your reaction time up to six times more than if you were driving while legally drunk (.08 BAR). That alone should speak volumes over how much it should be tolerated by anyone, regardless of profession.

This particular topic: Cop or not... you're in control of a 1 ton+ hunk of various metals hurtling through populated areas... pull over (or at the very least wait until you're stationery at a red light or something).

As for double standards in regard to civilians as opposed to cops: Some of the laws make sense as their job requires certain freedoms/actions... and some of the laws do not (like this particular case).

Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

My thoughts come in the form of a radical solution.

Fire every American police officer.
Let them apply for their jobs again.
Don't let them have their job if they can't fire a gun properly or can't handle a slight jump scare without whipping it out and shooting everything to hell.
Let other, intelligent and responsible people be officers not random idiots who're probably as criminal as those they're paid to catch.
Most importantly make sure they're not fat, that they can chase minor criminals down instead of just shooting them in the legs or outright killing them.

I'm sure these idiotic officers cost America a lot of money with their accidents and law suits so it would definitely be worth it.

I don't like double standards. It means "I'm going to enforce the laws on everyone... except myself... and my friends... and the politicians that *make* the laws that they don't want/have to follow." That's a can of worms I'm not willing to discuss. It makes my blood boil.

On the texting/driving subtopic: Ohmygosh is it so important that you say whatever it is that you want to risk running over some persons disobedient toddler that just waltzed out in front of you from between two parked cars on the side of the road?

Seriously. Unless you are perfectly fine with possibly ending the life of a complete stranger, you better be pulling that car over before you text "Lolz" to your boss/coworker/friend. I can't even tell you how many times I have had to swerve, slam on brakes, etc. because of distracted (almost always distracted by texting) drivers coming into my lane, or nearly hitting me head on.

Geez, this is ridiculous. So many commercials on how texting and driving is dangerous and I didn't see one saying "but it's okay if you're a police officer". The fact a man was killed do to his negligence and he was acquitted because of his badge is not anything short of disgusting.
