I'm considering voice acting

I think I want to go into voice acting. I enjoy acting but I don't like dressing up and I can't pull facial expressions on command. I don't care what kind of voice acting. Radio plays, computer games, audio books ect. I plan to practice reading and acting at the same time until I feel confident that I'm up to a certain standard. Cuz it's way harder than doing it from memory, especially when you aren't interacting with someone. When I'm happy with my ability then I plan to travel around auditioning for just about anything. Hopefully I can build up a nice portfolio and one day get a really good role.

Does anybody have any advice?

I would say consider how much any dream costs. Is it something you still see yourself pursuing if you find yourself scraping the very bottom of the barrel or should you consider a more conventional lifestyle? Voice acting seems like a very hit and miss profession, unless you're okay with the bad times of possibly being broke than I wouldn't consider it.

^ This is the site that started everything for me; demo reel, practice groups, auditions, paid work. They have radioplays, fandubs, audiobooks, games, original media, you name it! And the guides. THE GUIIIIIIDDDDESSS. Accents. Mic technique. Acting exercises. Editing.

I agree with what Pylons said though. Voice acting is unreliable and pays like dirt. But it's honestly a blessing to be someone besides your self, if only for 15 minutes. If it's what you want to do, start at the link I have you. Good luck and most importantly, have the time of your life!

I can't really speak from a voice acting perspective, but I used to do impressions quite a lot when I was younger. All I can really say is don't strain your voice too much, it gave me this weird rasp for like two weeks where I couldn't talk for s***. I think people drink lots of water or something to counteract that, not too sure.

Apple Juice.
Believe it or not. Apple Juice is a great way to keep the mouth moist apparently. And it tastes good as well.

Besides that, don't try to modify your voice too much keep it really close to your natural voice, that should prevent you from straining it too much.

And I've seen you make video's of playing video games while providing commentary, maybe check the comments to see whether or not people like your voice.

Oh and like my dad always told me: "Always follow your dreams and passions, but make sure you have a back-up profession."

That's something I've wanted to do too, well before I found out you actually have act good. The pajama wearing to work lifestyle of V.A was enticing but way more difficult then it looks.

It's a lot of hard work and doesn't pay great unless your a top voice actor. I'm aware of that. This is why I must practice. I'm taking on board everything you're all saying too. This will not be an easy walk in the park. I am going to learn to program as a backup plan in case I just don't have what it takes.

I thought I'd upload one of my attempts for some feedback. Bare in mind that my microphone is a bit buzzy. I thought this attempt was not bad but I think I can do better. I also did a bit of Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds but haven't uploaded it to Youtube. I wasn't confident that it was that great.

In order to properly assess your talent, please record us a clip of you mimicking Mr. Slave's voice from the highly acclaimed South Park series.

Thank you.
