WWE announced the surprise release of superstar Alberto Del Rio on Thursday after what the company deemed "unprofessional conduct" in an altercation with another employee.

Further details about the altercation are unknown at this time. Del Rio appeared on WWE programming on this week's edition of Monday Night Raw, going one-on-one with Dean Ambrose. WWE's release on the matter did not indicate when the altercation took place or with whom.

Del Rio's release comes after months of behind-the-scenes tension with the former world heavyweight champion. There were rumblings about the 37-year-old possibly leaving WWE have been floating in the ether since February, as he became disenchanted with the way his character was being written. His contract was due to expire this year, though it's unknown at what time.

Del Rio recently replaced the also-released Ricardo Rodriguez as a backstage interviewer and gave what in retrospect seems like an ironic promo.

"You are probably wondering where the fat and useless Ricardo Rodriguez is," Del Rio said, per Wrestling Inc. "Well, who cares where Ricardo Rodriguez is when you have the best international star to ever come to the WWE right here."

Del Rio, who got called up with a massive following in Mexican wrestling circles, debuted with the WWE in 2010. He was a four-time champion with a pair of WWE Championships and World Heavyweight Championships and won the 2011 Royal Rumble.

It will be interesting to see what happened when details of the altercation become public. For now, WWE will have to reshuffle after the loss of one of its more reliable heels.

Alberto Del Rio is an amazing talent and its sad that they let him go. My predictions is that he'll probably go back to the Mexican wrestling scene or make a shift to TNA or perhaps Jeff Jarrett's new promotion Global Force Wrestling, if thats what it called.

TNA tried to call him the moment they saw him gone. But that's a silly rumor. Kinda sad. Most of his matches were with Ziggler and Seamus. They were awesome matches though

They didn't 'let him go' the WWE fired him. There's a difference between not having your contract renewed and being fired for gross misconduct.

I've seen on a couple of those threads people saying "Well why has Del Rio been fired when Batista and Booker T have had fights backstage" and things like that, but to my mind that isn't really a valid point to not fire Del Rio. For starters that was a different time, like almost a decade ago even when the WWE wasn't in a PG era but also (and more importantly to my mind) slapping or hitting somebody else who isn't a wrestler is worse than if you have a fight with another wrestler.

Wrestling is one of those strange businesses where certain unacceptable things can actually benefit the business in a weird way. Normally slapping someone or fighting with someone at work would get you fired and in Del Rio's case I think it was the correct decision if the reports are accurate, however when it comes to backstage fights between two wrestlers that isn't scripted it actually creates heat between them because once the fans know that say, Matt Hardy for example is pissed off with Edge in real life for taking his girlfriend, they wanna see them go at it in the ring because there is more too that feud than there is if it was all artificially generated. Not only that but wrestlers are paid to take bumps, that's their job. They get thrown about and beaten up every week. Some random employee/stage hand doesn't.

Regardless of whatever they may have done or said to Del Rio, there's no interest or benefit generated by him slapping a non-wrestling employee and it just makes him look stupid. The WWE is kind of doing the right thing by firing him because in the real workplace that sort of thing is classed as gross-misconduct, but also if they tried coming out to defend his actions it would make the company look stupid too since they have nothing to actually gain from spending time and effort protecting someone was essentially just a mid-card talent for them. Additionally they have been digginginto the staff as they make huge cuts to try and reduce monetary losses lately and Del Rio doing something stupid like that was probably the worst time he could possibly have done anything to give WWE a reason to kick him to the curb.

According to the new report, WWE's social media manager was supposedly asked to wipe his plate clean following a meal in catering. He allegedly joked that it was Del Rio's job to clean the plate, which could be perceived as racist by Hispanic people. Del Rio was informed of the comment, and confronted him. The individual did not apologize for his remark and then smiled at him. Fuming, Del Rio slapped him.

I read that new report last night. It seems extremely subjective to me. I don't really see where exactly it could be read into that it was racist seeing as there's plenty of other hispanic wrestlers and staff in the company, all he did was say Del Rio's name. There was no mention of being hispanic even, just Del Rio's name and therefore at this stage in the story it just means that the guy was only ribbing on Del Rio.

When I read that article I didn't immediately jump to the conclusion that it was racist, or even something that you should be slapped for, I just assumed the meaning was that Del Rio wasn't exactly going anywhere in the ring so he made a joke that his job was to do the dishes now - which don't get me wrong, is very insulting but I don't think race had anything to do with it. I think that the comment that was made was fairly tame in comparison to some of the stuff that probably gets said about him on the internet for example, and if the guy was just making a joke that would kind of explain why he'd refuse to apologise even if what he said was still pretty disrespectful.

Del Rio still had no right to slap him. The chances are that if he had confronted the guy and asked him to apologise, and when he didn't Del Rio went straight to Human Resources and filed a complaint, he wouldn't be fired and Human Resources would have checked out what happened for him. By slapping the guy all it did was escalate a fairly meaningless squabble and ultimately cost him his own job, so yeah, the Tweets that GmGoken posted from WWE, while a little harsh to accept for some fans, are actually fair points.

This year is full of s*** in the WWE. First Taker loses at WM now this. This is worse than s***, I'd rather watch s*** mixed with puke. Love wrestling, its just a bad year man.

Its an alright year in my opinion. Atleast they're using new talent like Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, Cesaro (not as much), Ambrose..etc, and helping them reach stardom. Roman Reigns is my boy. He's like how Cena was back in the early 2000s, when he was hungry to reach the top.

Way better than 2007 thats for sure, I remember how sh** that year was. One thing that I miss about the WWE was when Smackdown and Raw were separate brands and they had that WWE Draft thingy. That was always exciting.

I don't think it was necessarily racist, it could have simply been a joke, since Del Rio is barely around, and when he is, it's to out someone over, so WWE kept him around just to clean the dishes.

However, I can see how it could be considered racist.

But it isn't a huge loss. Del Rio is a horrible talker and is just very bland and boring. He can wrestle, but that means nothing because he is an absolute bore.

The last I heard was he was going to let his contract expire and go back to Mexico anyway.

Who I heard it from is very reliable... he was the same person who told me about John Cena's 2008 Royal Rumble return. A return that nobody was supposed to know about... I'm surprised he didn't get fired for telling me.

Ohh damn, yeh I have admit aswell I never really enjoyed Alberto Del Rio as of recent. Back in 2010 and 2011, he was more enjoyable to watch as we just began to watch him in the WWE. Back when he used to come out in expensive cars and had his own personal ring announcer.

Ricardo was always more over than Del Rio. Lol.

He is also a much better wrestler. Shame WWE didn't let him wrestle.
