Spoiler: click to toggle Saiyans are a race of fierce space fighters, recently put under Freiza's employ and given advanced technology. Their goal is pretty simple. Conquer planets and exterminate the inhabitants. We all know this. But why were they so good at violence? First off you have the Saiyan tail, which is an obvious advantage. Transforming into Oozaru form can increase their powerlevel by 10x, and it makes them intimidating as all hell. But we're comparing them to humans and the majority of the Saiyans in the series lose their tails, so we'll not go too far into that. Advantage 1) Gravity. Planet Vegeta has 10x the gravity of earth, which logically makes the inhabitants 10x stronger than earth inhabitants. Think about it. If Goku at the beginning of Dragonball Z had been undergoing the same training regime on Planet Vegeta, his powerlevel would be 4,220 instead of 422. Advantage 2) Zenkais. This is the term for Saiyan's power increase when they are healed from near death. This is an evolutionary trait the Saiyans received in order to help them overcome powerful enemies. It's almost like adrenaline enhanced adaptation. If you can't beat what you're fighting? Get stronger. Advantage 3) Violent disposition. It's true. A Saiyan's fighting strength is their love for fighting. It takes away much of their fear and lets them reach their potential. It's also why most Saiyans have a bit less emotional attachment to others, compared to humans. Advantage 4) Animal Senses. This wasn't shown much later in the series, but as Goku demonstrates as a child, they have incredible senses of smell and hearing. Advantage 5) Increased metabolism. The reason why Goku can eat 56 square meals a day is also the reason Saiyans have incredible endurance. Advantage 6) Natural Ki control. Saiyans aren't better at manipulating Ki, but almost every Saiyan can control Ki to some extent which allows them to fly and shoot energy beams. So most of the Saiyan's strengths, other than their planet gravity, is their physiology. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Humans, otherwise known as "Earthlings" are a relatively weaker yet resourceful species that inhabit the planet earth. Earth is a low gravity planet of many different biomes. Most humans are ants compared to the average Saiyan warrior. However, there are a select few that can reach incredible heights. I am going to list the advantages humans like Krillin and Yamcha have, instead of listing the average human citizen for obvious reasons. Advantage 1) Training. Earthlings training is much more sophisticated than Saiyan training. Saiyan's are born with high powerlevels. Goku was extremely weak for a Saiyan baby, yet with a powerlevel of 2, he was already almost half as strong as an adult human male (5). Yet, even though humans are born very weak, a few earthlings have developed ways to train that allows them to reach super human levels. This is why Krillin with an estimated powerlevel of 10 (which is still extremely strong for a human) had increased his power over 20x in the 6 years that spanned Dragonball. And then he, along with the rest of the earthlings, received training that allowed them to increase their strength over 5x with kami. And then yet again with King Kai. Not only does this increase their powerlevel, but because they were taught by Masters of Martial Arts, they kept their previous master's training techniques to further enhance their training later. Advantage 2) Skill. Due to training, a human is much more skilled than a Saiyan when it comes to techniques, Ki manipulation, and overall abilities. When Raditz, Vegeta, and Nappa arrived on earth, they had never before seen beings that could raise their powerlevel at will or sense Ki. The only character in Dragonball canon that can raise their powerlevel (bar transformations) without encountering or training with earthlings is Captain Ginyu (to Goku's surprise). Cell was infused with human cells and Buu had absorbed beings that could raise their fighting power. Nappa and Vegeta was seen powering up, but it’s safe to assume they were merely warming up and preparing to attack rather than actually raising their battle strength. The only reason the earthlings were no match for the Saiyans were the higher gravity and the Zenkais the Saiyans had received over their lifetimes. Advantage 3) Technique. As listed above in skill, the humans created a vast range of techniques that allowed them to breach and bypass the Saiyan's natural abilities. Examples of this include the Destructo Disk and the Tri Beam. Vegeta's Final Flash is often remarked upon as a powerful attack, but it has nothing on these two attacks. The Destructo Disk is an attack that has the ability to cut through absolutely anything. All those times in the anime that the disk failed? Filler. It was non canon. If Krillin had thrown a Destructo Disk at Cell in his perfect form, Cell would have been cut in half. Tienshinhan, no matter if he is an alien or human, received earthling training and all of its benefits, which allowed him to use the Tri Beam and upgrade it to the "Neo Tri Beam" or "Shin-Kikoho" which means Ki cannon. It's theorized he mastered the technique and upgraded it during his training with King Kai. Now, I personally think Tien is stronger than most give him credit for, but he was no match for a Super Saiyan in strength, much less the Androids or Cell. Yet with his special technique, he held Semi Perfect Cell off of 18 long enough for her to escape. Another technique that allowed humans to overcome or stall stronger opponents is the solar flare. We all know how that is invaluable. Advantage 4) Emotion. Fear. Anger. Humans are naturally more emotional than the stoic Saiyans. And while some would consider this a weakness, their fear and anger and love allow them to overcome incredible obstacles. An example would be when Krillin destroyed the 4 Saibamen when he was overcome with anger from Yamcha's death. The human condition is what makes Half Saiyans so powerful. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Conclusion: Saiyans are generally superior fighters because of their natural strengths, the ability to get stronger when defeated, and planet gravity. The earthlings however, have the advantages of better training, techniques, and over all skill. This is why Goku is the hero of the story. He has the best of both worlds. Thank you. |

I honestly disagree with your assumption that skill is better attained by Earthlings. Vegeta's technique seemed pretty refined when Vegeta landed on Earth. |

Vegeta definitely had fighting experience, and I'm not saying he was ever dumb in terms of fighting, since he adopted different techniques quickly. He was just more power/experience than technique when he landed on earth. You have to agree the same for Nappa and Raditz at least. |

You make some good points. Not all of them, as stated above, but definitely a thorough breakdown of the two races. I think culture is the reason humans can be seen as superior in techniques. Krillin and Yamcha was generally lucky that they had a teacher like Master Roshi and later Kami. Saiyans didn't have that advantage. |

You mentioned that only Ginyu, Cell, and Boo could move their power around. This is untrue, Freeza did it as well, even in his second form. Piccolo notices that Freeza's ki spiked. |

You're right on that. Though since he has higher transformations he could have just unleashed a bit more of his power from them instead of actually concentrating his ki to increase it. But fair point.
Generally I'd prefer following logic than a character's perspective, and Goku proves with both MSSJ and SSJ3 he's more able than Vegeta. But if you need quotes, well... Chapter: 458 (DBZ 264), P10.3-4, P11.2-3 Context: after Goku and Vegeta fight for a while Goku: “Un-unbelievable…I thought I trained considerably in the afterlife…But we’re completely even…You trained more than me…” Vegeta: “…No, that’s not it…I think I did perform more special training than you, but you’re a greater genius than I am… No matter how much time passed, this gap wouldn’t change…I realized this, when you fought with that monster Babidi sent… It was a shock…That’s why I secretly resolved myself…[ ] At the tournament, the people who knew that pair who Babidi made into his underlings said that they had become far stronger than before…I remembered that, and I thought…That if I were taken over by him too, then the gap between you and me would vanish…And I was right…” Chapter: 309 (DBZ 115), P2.1 Context: after learning that Freeza killed Vegeta and is fighting Goku Yamcha: “Da…damn it…That bastard’s too much for even Goku…” Kaio: “They’re having a good match…[ ] The Saiyans are an odd group…No, maybe it’s just Goku…His strength has no limit…He’s like a completely different person than when he trained here…I don’t really understand him…” Chapter: 398 (DBZ 204), P2.6 Cell: “Son Goku…You’re as accustomed to battle as I’d expect…You’re quite different from the others…” Note: He doesn't necessarily mean strength. Chapter: 391 (DBZ 197), P13.1-2 Context: After sensing half of Full Power Super Saiyan Goku’s max power from a distance. Vegeta (to self): “Damn you, Kakarot… It’s always like this… He’s always a step ahead of me…! It drives me crazy…Just when I think I’ve caught up, he widens the lead again…” Chapter: 391 (DBZ 197), P1.3-4, P2.1-4 Context: talking about the Room of Spirit and Time Vegeta: “Well, well…So even the great Kakarot admits defeat against the rigors of that room…” Goku: “Maybe…But pointlessly toughening up my body more than this is just torture, not training. But I won’t object if you guys enter that room again. It looks like you still have room left to toughen up more.” Vegeta: “What was that…? I don’t like that…The way you said that made it sound like you’re saying that your true ability is greater than mine…” Goku: “Yeah, a whole lot greater, I think.” Chapter: 402 (DBZ 208), P10.1 Vegeta: “It drives me crazy, but I’ll admit it…Despite doing all that special training, I didn’t surpass Kakarot…Th-that bastard’s a genius…But Cell is 1 or 2 steps above even him…” I'm sorry but the entire later half of the series is both the Narrator and characters saying "Goku is better than Vegeta."
