NASA officially releases statement: "We Are Not Alone In The Universe"

"Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the war room!"

Just to save you time on reading this article, they haven't found ET or anything yet.

But due to the recent discovery of the highly Earth-like Planet named Kepler-186f which revolves around its host star in the "habitable" zone, Scientists at NASA are confident that they will find Alien life in the next 20 years.

NASA: "We are not alone"

Do you think their statement is premature or bold?
Do you think it's logical?
If extraterrestrial life was found (of any kind), how do think that humanity on a social and scientific level will be impacted by this discovery?

Discuss.

I think it's logical. Considering how many planets could be in the habitable zone of a star just in this Galaxy, the idea that life only exists on Earth is laughable. We already know about many 'Super-Earths' and planets that are candidates for being habitable, so some sort of discovery of alien life is inevitable.

It truly is laughable to look at the immense space our galaxy takes up, even just our solar system, and think we're the only ones out there. Similar to the ocean, we just don't know what's out there for sure.

As for this specifically, the first thing that came to mind was "war." If we encounter beings like us, or beings more advanced than us, I could see a fight breaking out because that's just what humans do. We fight, we screw things up.

Seeing as how Scientists have estimated 200 billion Galaxies in the observable universe alone...I'd find it INCREDIBLY stupid to say there is no other life out there.

I think the science side would rejoice and would attempt to find ways to communicate almost immediately. The social side...I don't know. If that War of the Worlds incident is anything to go by I hope other lifeforms don't bother coming her since they'll likely be met with hostility or be met with being killed in some degree and dissected. Seeing as how hostile people or even thousands of people in a small area can be towards our own race, I wouldn't have much hope for us. But maybe something nice'll happen and we humans will see the bigger picture and instead of dividing ourselves into races, we'd just go under THE human race. It'd only be right no?

Well I believe NASA has known about extraterrestrials for 30 odd years now, but yeah this is interesting.

What do we do if they are primitive? We surely can't interact with a medieval species? We could mess up their entire culture. I think if they are so confident of discovering life then they should set up a prime directive system just like in Star Trek. If they don't have one already. Never interact in anyway with a species not capable of space flight.

I won't deny that's true, but it could be something as insignificant as a fungus. Regardless if it is, it's still life of which its origin isn't Earth.

I just think that this would impact religious belief on so many levels. If we found life more advanced, or just as advanced as us, what kind of religious-based consequences would that hold?

What? You wannah peace of me?

Well I dunnoh what we might come across I don't think we should contact anything that's out there...

I don't think it is a bold statement, I mean considering how much they put in to this research it wouldn't be much time before we actually found something out there.

And like Drew said, there's many of worlds such as our own out there, it only makes sense that we'd find life forms in such worlds.

Sure foreign world visitors are great, especially if they are pacifists and old and probably millions of more years advanced than us. But what if we stumble upon a species that's like us? And they are advanced too? They might wipe us out and take our planet, or worse. Enslave us for some time until we actually break out of their captivities.

Then again we might get new tech like hover boards and access to medicines that might help us, maybe they don't need medicines since they're so advanced and poop.

My 8th grade science teacher was the first one to convince me that there was a possibility of other live beings in the universe. Her reasoning was that the universe was so large and complex that it's ridiculous to think Earth is the only planet with life.

Based on what I've read this planet Kepler is under the right circumstances to provide life and is pretty much like ours except bigger. However, there's still a lot we don't know about this planet. It's both logical and premature to make this statement.

I feel that if there was anything out there as advanced as us, we would have already encountered them. By life, I take it to mean plants or something.

Pretty sure we all knew this is some form. But please oh please DO NOT interact with them. Can you imagine if somehow we get Space War? Imagine if we LOSE too. We already can't trust each other but damn Space War mix with our own war. That's too stupid.

We'd have to at least try and interact with them. I don't know about you, but I don't think I could live comfortably not doing so. Mankind's curiosity would end up outweighing our doubts about conflict or war. What's the point in being totally negative about another sentient species? We've got to be cautious, yeah, but aiming to contact these people and eventually meeting them would give us a good incentive to push forward with advancements in science and space-travel.

Yeah...no. Not for me. I'm find with mankind here. I would live on with my life if we don't ever interact with them. Doubt they'll speak any Earth languages and hell they might be wild animals but with advance science. Hell they might be the most civil people in history with no science. Idgaf. Don't mess with them. Don't talk to them.

I don't think they mean like an advanced species that is all grown up like us. More like bacteria and something like that.
