http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2014/05/05/teacher-tells-student-cant-read-bible-in-my-classroom/ My apologies for a link to Fox News but I saw this on Facebook the other night and when I searched on Google this was the first result I saw. To summarize: Now you guys went to school and you probably had free reading time every day. So this 12-year-old brings a Bible to read in class. Now based on the information he was not preaching to the class or disturbing any of the students. His teacher simply noticed he was reading the book. She told him several times to put the book away and the young man refused. Finally she made him stand in front of the class and made a phone call to his parents. Here's some background on that specific Bible. According to his parents he received that Bible last Christmas from a local church and it became like a prized possession to him. Giovanni, the boy's name, said that he loves reading the Bible any time he's allowed too. Now the parents feel their son's rights were violated by the school and are taking legal action. Here's direct text from the article that I was interested in: "In February and March, the boy’s teacher ordered him to stop reading his Bible. During those instances, the child complied with his teacher’s demands. But, when his father discovered what happened, he began investigating and determined the school was violating his son’s Constitutional rights. From that point on, Rubeo told his son that if his teacher or anyone else at the school told him he could not read his Bible during free reading time, he was to politely ask the teacher to call home. And that’s what happened on April 8. When the children pulled out their books, the teacher immediately targeted Giovanni." After the phone call Giovanni's father, we'll call him Mr. Rubeo, called the school. The principal told him he'd have to take his complaint to the legal department. Mr. Rubeo soon after sent a letter pretty much telling the school to stop telling his son he can't read the Bible in school and telling them that they are violating his Constitutional rights. The principal's response: "You child is permitted to read the Bible before school, after school and during lunch, in accordance to the law." Here's my opinion, I think as long as Giovanni Rubeo was not disturbing any of the class he should be allowed to read the Bible. I think the teacher was wrong for putting him on blast and kind of making an example out of him. In fact, I think the teacher caused a far bigger disturbance to the other students by making a big deal out of it than the boy simply reading a religious book could have ever done. It's really ridiculous. Overall, I feel like students should be allowed to read a religious book as long as it is not causing any problems for other students. |

Yeah this is the opposite of what generally occurs. Someone discriminating a Christian who bothers no one shouldn't be pressured just as an Athiest shouldn't be discriminated for their beliefs. Otherwise we're hypocrites.

Well yeah, if an Atheist student read that book "God: The Failed Hypothesis" by Victor J. Stenger I don't think a teacher (no matter how religious he/she may be) would have the right to tell that kid they could not read it. If it's free reading you should allow the kids to read whatever they choose |

Yeah I'm not going to take this story at face value due to it's agenda driven source. Seems we're only getting one side of the story here. |

Well, Fox News is a major network so their sources are somewhat reliable. So I had to summarize the facts they put out myself without adding any of the extra biased stuff. But if you want I can look for another source. I don't know much about The Blaze and how down the middle they are but here you go: http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2014/05/08/boy-claims-teacher-said-he-couldnt-read-the-bible-in-her-classroom-now-his-dad-is-making-a-demand-of-his-own/ Edited by Return Of Imjustsaiyanbro, Jul 12 2014, 05:29 PM.

Alright that source is better. It's more clear that the teacher is just a bully, picking on one child. I doubt she even cares what book he has. It's an excuse to pick on him in my opinion. Comments at the bottom of that page... some people are f***ing idiots I have to say. |

^ Comments on most news sites are filled with right-wing garbage so I find. As for this topic, the kid should have the right to read whatever he wants if he's not going to preach whatever he's reading to other people. It would be very similar to an Atheist in a religious school refusing to read the Bible or any other religious text because of his/her personal beliefs. |

I heard about this a few months back. I'm an Atheist, and don't see the problem with bringing a Bible to school, if you're using it for personal use. |

Fox New is not reliable at all. They are one of the most biased news sources out there. Ontopic: Yeah, the kid should be allowed to read the bible. It's okay to read fiction so how could the bible be any worse? If you're not disturbing anyone else it's okay Edited by Ginyu, Jul 13 2014, 12:54 PM.

The least biased news agency so far that I know of is RT.... If its in English and comprehensible in any way, I don't see why the teacher should stop him and force him to stand up in front of the class to be humiliated as she calls for his parents. If he isn't preaching I don't see what's the problem... I guess they're trying to create a secular environment within the work place and schools. Edited by MrTsoi, Jul 16 2014, 03:25 AM.

See this is kinda part of the unnecessary nonsense I think schools in general should cut right out. It's just a book, who cares? The teacher should suck it up. Especially if it's "free reading time" or whatever. Complaining about it is just wasting time. That's assuming all details here are correct of course. |
