In countries like Japan, Germany and France where the population has a very hefty amount of atheists, it's not seen as something bad because it's fairly normal. The cynic in me however, thinks this; Minorities are protected. Gays/Lesbians/Bi/Trans are well on it's way to getting the rights they deserve and will soon be completely protected. Feminism is resurfacing with a major vengeance. For the people who NEED to throw stones in order to have self-satisfaction, atheists are an easy target.

Given our history of religious persecution and superstition (ie the Salem Witch Trials), you'd think that we'd be incredibly religious, but we're not. We're probably one of the least religious places in the US. You live in New England? Word! I live in Massachusetts. Doesn't place it higher on the list of importance in the universe. Everyone and everything serves a purpose. It doesn't matter if you're a street sweeper or a cosmic being. You're role in the universe is equally as important in my eyes.

I'm an atheïst but even I understand that a higher being can not be compared to a king or president. Religions like Christianity refer to Jesus and God as "The King of Kings". But you also have religions like the one from Ancient Egypt that refers to Ozymandias as "The King of Kings" as well.
