How is Dr. Gero Alive in DBZ?

I've been watching the Cell Arc again and something hit me, how is Gero still alive by the time of DBZ? Back in the Commander Red Saga, after lamenting how his top scientists were out done by a group of teenagers when it came to accurate dragon radars, Commander Red orders Adjutant Black to have all of their scientists executed. Black also had three days to do it so it was likely done and Gero being the RRA top scientist would have been top of the list. Even if he was able to escape, why would he still be loyal to an organization who tried to have him executed and turned out to be a lie as Commander Red was going to betray them all to wish himself taller?

Also has it ever to been mentioned if Major Metallitron and this thing (which I like to name Shockwave) were Dr. Gero creations?

We can't say how. Perhaps he had Androids Bodyguards protecting him? Perhaps he hid? All we know is that he survived.

I think Daizenshu or something stated that he created all of Red Ribbon's robots and Androids.

Perhaps Goku didn't wipe out the entire RRA. There are still some survivors left, not only Gero.

Doctor Gero created the armor, so he's the head dude in charge. No one probably knew about him, anyway. He probably ran the army from afar, much like King Cold does. A little too much thinking on this one.

He created the army, he dipped when Goku was destroying it, he countered with androids years and years later.

Another theory is that Dr. Gero anticipated such a scenario and made sure he would survive.

Oh, and another thing... I can't find the quote in the manga. Not my own or the official Viz translation. Was this said in the anime?

An unrelated question here, but is it correct that Gero was created by Toriyama later on in the Android saga?

What I understand is that Toriyama's editor wasn't happy with the design of the Androids 19 and 20. So Toriyama came up with 16, 17 and 18. Perhaps then he decided to make 20 Gero?

Yes, I have to apologies because I incorrectly remembered were the scene was as it is in episode Episode 49 Roshi Surprise in the General Blue Saga not the Commander Red Saga though that mean Black had even more time to have them dead (hell Black seemed very happy to do it).

There also still the question of why he’d still be loyal to them after they ordered him dead and the army was founded on a lie. The only reason for him doing so is if here was the true leader of the RRA but I can’t find any evidence of that.

Well, if it isn't in the manga (the order of execution), then it's irrelevant. He'd just be mad at Goku for destroying his work.
