Hello,
Couple of days ago I bought this signed draw from Yahoi Auctions,
I had a lot people telling me that it was authentic, and now, in an Spanish forum they are telling me is not.
Could you guys help me with this to finally clarify if it is authentic or not?
Thanks!

"Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the war room!"

I know for a fact that there are knock offs of these types of drawings from him, and I hate to say it, but this one does indeed look like one of those. I've closely studied his style of artwork through-out the years, being that I too draw a lot and his style is one of my biggest inspirations.
I'm no expert, but the shaky lines is the thing that really suggests that it's a tracing of his real work.

The whole thing looks traced, including the signature. The signatures in his real works are fluid, while the one in yours looks shaky and copied. Not to mention the "starting points" on some of the characters in his name are in the wrong spot when you compare it to his real work. You can tell because the starting ends of the lines are fatter than the later parts.
In addition to this, the looping isn't smooth like it would be for someone who is signing their own name.

For example, these are some real pieces of art done from him:

The thing that really throws me off about that Gohan of yours is the eyes.

I agree with Ketchup. I really hate to say it too, and I would understand your frustration.
What throws me off in this is that his traps (muscles next to the neck) are rounded.
I know it's not much, but I have also studied his art style through the years of reading the manga and looking at his illustrations, and whenever something really clicks in my head that's it's not right, I can very much tell when it's not. But plenty of times I can be wrong, because after all it's art! It's not always geometrically accurate all the time.
And I feel that hair is off. Probably because it also seems roundish and less edged as he is used to doing.
Also, I kind of have the feeling that this seems based off other of Toriyama's work (illustrations or the manga).

That Goku looks real.
The style of eyes and the ease in which the signature is done are the things I'm sold on.

Also something to notice is that most of these are quick drawings. The eyes almost always have two paralell lines under them. This was changed up during the actual manga drawings, but this "two line" style of his goes back to as early as 1992:

The signature is one thing that you should always look at. If it looks shaky and the lines are all the same width from start to end, it's likely traced.
If it looks like it was done with confidence and ease with smooth loops and lines, than it's likely real.

Honestly if you want to test the validity of the signature, you should take it into a professional signature analyst.

This is the reply I had from a guy from Japan who is an expert on this matter...

hi Aritz,

Thank you for the reply.
This auction account holder "Ponpoko014" is not listed on our black
list at this point.

But after careful investigation with my colleague, I'm regret to
inform you that we consider it is probably an imitation.

You can see the description of the auction page that says "This is a
paint of Son Gohan with stamp. Very rare. etc.....". But actually, he
never said "DRAWN BY AKIRA TORIYAMA" in the description.
This is very popular trick that scammers use to avoid claims from
buyers. If you make a claim to him, he will just say " Oh, I never
said that this paint was drawn by Toriyama. I just sold you a paint of
Son Gohan etc.....".

There are alot of other factors we found in the paint that show it as
imitation like brushstroke.

I do recommend you not purchase this kind of collection on Yahoo
Auction as it is very risky.

Best,
-Sam
