"Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the war room!"

We usually go on and on talking about it, but no has ever given an explanation to what it is and how the characters utilize it.

However, according to Toriyama, ki is made up of three types of energy:
-Genki (Vigor)
-Youki (Bravery)
-Shouki (State of Mind)

However, since ki is simply the Japanese version of the Chinese "Chi", "Chi" when translated from Chinese means "Breath" or "air". We also know that in DB, usually a lot of shouting is involved when using ki, most commonly when powering up (at least in the English version of the manga, it's known as "revving").

I think it's hard for Westerners to grasp this concept fully because we don't really have a context to compare it to in our culture. However, the closest context to something in western culture I can compare it to is a force called "Vril" that was introduced in the 1871 novel "Vril, the Power of the Coming Race" by Edward Bulwer-Lytton.

"Vril" in this novel is a type of energy that can be found in everything and used for pretty much everything that chi is. The only real difference is that it isn't universal, and can actually act on its own to destroy the planet.

So, this is simply a general topic.
What exactly is ki and how exactly do characters in Dragon Ball manipulate it and control their output? What exactly is powering up and how is it done?

I like to think of it as a sort of sixth sense that leads to an unlocking of some 7th and 8th senses every living being has the capability of accessing, it's just sort of locked from them until they learn to unlock ki.

Goku once he had learned to control his ki eventually learned how to read minds and focus his ki into attacks and projecting imagery of people through sensing them. Or rather the way I look at how ki sensing works is an entirely black field but those with ki stand out with white or something or rather it depends on if their evil or not. people like Freeza would be projected with an evil looking aura that forms into a shape like him. Humans would probably look like white figures, and Gohan or the other Z fighers would have a blue outline or something along those lines. It's how I imagine Goku can control where he Instant Transmissions to.
