Firefox Favourite Manga Dragon Ball, Fullmetal Alchemist, Assassination Classroom, Deadman Wonderland	I don't know if an informality has much to do with it because Bulma calls Goku "Son" on quite a few occasions in the manga. Even as late as the Trunks arc. I think she even called him that in the Boo arc on at least one occasion. It seems to me that it's more the context in which they're speaking of that person, and seems to happen primarily if they're speaking of him in third person. If they're speaking to him directly or to his close family, they refer to him as "Goku". Piccolo seems a bit more iron clad with this because he calls Goku "Son" consistently up until the Freeza arc, and it happens occasionally after that.
