Media Representation of Mass Murder

So I saw this fantastic video today which talks about how the media represents mass murders and how it really is the worst thing that can possibly be done with them (beyond the fact that they seem to place blame inappropriately and ignore so many important aspects).

Why do we continue to perpetrate things which have been said to cause problems? Should we stop? Do you agree with this video?

"Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the war room!"

I agree 100% with this video.
In the US alone, they stopped broadcasting news of suicides in the 1980s, and within a year's time, they US average for suicide plummeted by as much as 40%. Promotion of violence is the thing that makes us more violent, and this is why violence in the US is so out of control now. When you turn on the NEWS in the US, it's all bad news about wars and violent crimes.

For example, per capita, Canada has more guns than the US and less restrictive gun laws, and they have barely a fraction of the gun crime. Wanna know why? Because they run nightly specials on environmental specials and diplomatic stuff. Violent crime, even around the world, is almost never reported in Canada.

And it's not only about mass murders either. This "Knock Out" game for example wouldn't have taken off like it did if the news networks would've just left it alone.

And half of the stuff reported isn't even news. Even Larry King (who's retired from CNN) said that he would've started laughing if he was still employed and reporting the Malaysia Flight that went missing. Even he said that news completely over-hypes things, and spends all its resources digging for material instead of simply reporting what people all ready know. He pointed out that with the Flight, all that anyone knew about the flight in that 4 week span that it was being reported, was that the plane "turned left". And he couldn't be more right.

I often agree with things Charlie Brooker has said on his Newswipe programme, he highlights many problems with the news.

The thing is I have always thought this kind of thing on the news to be stupid, it effectively glorifies mass murder and if someone has nothing to lose and wants some fame, it looks like the perfect opportunity, then they are forever immortalised. If you don't name the person or show their face, then it isn't going to be as spectacular of a display, which may help prevent such crimes.

Another problem is the speculation, it often mentions mental illness, which doesn't help the stigma of mental illnesses.

Exactly! Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold saw how media portrays and oversaturates everything and knew their mass murder would not only go down in history, but they would forever be immortalized and they were right.

Whenever another shooting happens, they mention Columbine, when the Sheriff's department said they would release Dylan's diary, it was all brought up again, when the select few was allowed to view the basement tapes, it was all brought up again, same when Eric's diary was announced to be made public... hell, one of the girls that survived Columbine was also at Virginia Tech when that shooting happened and what that happened everything was brought up all over again. Same thing with that Theatre shooting, Columbine was also brought up again and that's not counting how many specials they've gotten over the years and get this. Lifetime wanted to make their own special and the cameraman they chose happen to also be one of the survivors at Columbine. Don't have a link right now, but when I find it I'll post it.

But yeah, this crap doesn't need to be on the morning, afternoon or evening news... only on the nighty stuff and even then it doesn't need to be blown up or showing pictures, now I do think if the public wants to know about it and all the details I do believe they should be granted access to it... but there needs to be a way of going about it.

If the public needs access give the information in the most boring and factual manner possible. Ignore all speculation and hyping.

The only people who really -need- access though are te people in the local community.
