getting a circumcision as an adult is actually safer, because you have a developed immune system to fight off any potential infection. the only downside is that you're actually going to remember the pain, so the doctor has to "waste" money on a local anesthetic.
Actually when you're an adult, since the skin isn't as elastic and supple as an infant, getting a circumcision is actually more dangerous the older you get. There's more potential for damage.
so you trade off higher risk of infection for higher risk of damage. i'd call that a wash, at worst. certainly not a great reason to do it to someone before they can consent.
I'm simply stating a fact, and it doesn't mean that I even agree with circumcision at any age.
If I find out I'm having a boy, I don't think that I'll get him circumcised. I live in the US, so people here are obsessed with cleanliness anyway, and I live in an area that has a lot of mountains and trees, not sand. The chances of a potential son getting bladder infections or getting sand in there is practically non-existent.

But even then, how many times do you hear about infants getting infections from circumcisions? I'm not denying that they probably exist, but I've never heard of one.

The only people who really circumcise their children are Americans, and that's due to deep religious roots. I won't be circumcising my kid if I for some reason get pregnant with a boy.
...no.

Circumcision came from Jewish tradition, to separate God's people from the Gentiles. It definitely isn't an "american" thing.
I said usually Americans. Which is true. Lol. Basically all Americans are circumcised.

I agree with FanGirl.

Even if circumcision didn't start as an American thing (because it wasn't), it definitely is now. It's extremely common in the US.
Studies show that as much as 60%-70% of all American baby boys are circumcised, but to be entirely honest, I'm pretty sure that the number is much higher than that.

I'm thinking it's closer to 85%.

The only American boys I've known who have been uncircumcised have come over from another country.

it's not as common among black men, in my experience. i'd say about 50/50.

Pretty sure Muslims and Jews circumcise too. I might be wrong about that.
No, you're absolutely right.

Well, I can say that being circumcised is actually beneficial more than being uncircumcised. It decreases the risk of bladder infections, STDs, and cancer. On the other hand, it will decrease the sensitivity of the genital. In my opinion, it's benefits outweigh the risks.

This is just my opinion.

I don't believe that Jehovah's Witnesses circumcise either, I could be wrong though.

The one guy I "knew" who wasn't, his mom who raised him by herself, was Jehovah's Witness.

In well developed countries like Canada and America, it should be the choice of the person not parents whether or not they want to get snipped. Cancer occurring in the foreskin is already less than a 1% chance in these countries with or without cutting of the tip of the penis. Hygiene is no different cut or not with the proper care. In a third world country where circumcision could actually provide help, then yeah maybe it should be done. The problem is in third world countries the circumcision is often done without the proper tools and care, causing infections and death instead of going against them. I find it completely unnecessary in religious cases and/or the case of females. If it's done it should be done based on the person's own preference or if it can actually make them safer by large percentage not by a .2% like in many first world countries and should always be done safely.

there is no solid evidence of any benefit to circumcision. none at all. for every study that's found a benefit, there's been another that found none. and increasing your exposure to irritants never reduced anyone's risk of cancer. if you want to make claims, make sure they make sense, first.

as for hygiene, though. women get UTIs 10 times as often as men. i suppose you advocate cutting out the labia to reduce the risk of infection, right? after all, it's just going to decrease the sensitivity of the genitals. because UTIs are so horrible that it's worth cutting off pieces of your body to avoid them.

do you know that 111 circumcisions get performed for each UTI that gets prevented under the best study results?

I was talking about men circumcision because women circumcision seems pretty weird.

No, I didn't know that!

Here in NZ circumcision is rather rare - i've only ever known one person to have it and that was for medical reasons when he was younger. There is no real benefit from doing it imo.

I'd circumcise my boy if I ever had one. It's just my personal preference, I suppose, being a circumcised male myself.

They say that only about 1/20 of boys are born with foreskin that completely covers the gans. So with that being said, even if most boys are circumcised in the US, there's really no reason for it other than cultural tradition.

i've seen a few hundred penises in my lifetime, and almost all the uncircumcised ones completely cover the glans. then again, if that's a racial characteristic, it might explain it, since nearly all the uncircumcised penises i've seen were black.

I'm thinking it's a "white thing" to be circumcised in the US. To be entirely honest, the only guy I've ever seen (in person) who wasn't circumcised was actually only half white. He was also half Puerto Rican.

And just to bring this up... hopefully that "over 100" wasn't all in person, Lunar. :o_O:
The only way that wouldn't be weird is if you were a doctor, or a porn director/star.
