While it may be simplistic, it seems like I can actually watch the anime, and read the manga without getting bored. With other anime's I have watched, I have enjoyed them for about the first 10-12 episodes, but then I would get bored, and stop watching the show altogether.

I agree with others on this, i would rather take a simplistic, but fun to watch anime, than a complicated, but boring anime. That's my opinion.

It's not about the quality ratings a show gets.
It's about the impact it has on people.
And, as you can tell DBZ has a great impact on people.
Therefore, it is very special.

It lacks character development , and the story is all the same. There is no life in the series. Its too.. basic like I said.

What about with Piccolo, and Vegeta, and Gohan? Did they not go through character development? They did.

This thread is pretty dangerous territory, and yet no angry comments. I'm so proud of you guys!

I'm actually on your team Alex, it was alright a few years ago but I don't think I ever got attached to it like a lot of people do. The music is fantastic, but that's really the only thing that draws me in. I don't like how in a franchise where people move so fast, everything moves so slowly.

Dragon Ball's still good tho

I can agree with you there. Piccolo, Gohan and Vegeta all had great development, but, in the grand scheme of things, they're three characters. The manga/anime had a really long run and had plenty of time to develop more characters, but it didn't really do so.

Nowadays, I watch DBZ purely for entertainment. In my opinion, it's outclassed by a lot of stuff, Part 1 Naruto, for example. A lot of character development mixed with world-building, action and atmosphere. It just pulled those things off better than DBZ ever did, for me anyway.

Better to have an entertaining "basic" anime VS a jumbled up piece of garbage anime that takes itself too seriously.

That's the vibe i'm getting from a lot of anime's nowadays.

I agree

A simple slice of bread is way better than a meal that is meant to be fancy but ends up being a complete mess

Nobody is telling you to watch bad shows though. You can't assume that every show that isn't as simple as DBZ is going to be bad.

I didn't say that ALL shows that are complex end up failing. Infact if done right a complex show can be very memorable.
I am just saying that Just because something is simole doesn't make it bad and just because something is complex doesn't make it good.

I mean no offense by this, but why do people still like Naruto? It continues to prolong itself to the point where the series has become uninteresting IMO. I also have a really hard time getting invested in anyone's character save Naruto, Gaara, Rock Lee and Might Guy. Everyone else is boring and in Sasuke's case, an emotionless prick.

For once I agree with Alex. I've heard the term "Nostalgia Cow" and I believe it sums Z up fine.

Dragon Ball Z was the best series ever... Until I watched Fullmetal Alchemist.

It was the funniest series... Before I got into Gintama.

Now, I'm looking into series like Death Note, Toriko etc, and I have come to the conclusion that Z can't compare to A LOT of series.

I still like the series, but it's far from great. I think Courage the Cowardly Dog is better both plot wise and comedy wise, and that ain't even Anime.

Kishimoto's done a great job in a lot of different aspects that I mentioned before; world-building, character development and atmosphere, as well as a decent plot. Part 1 was quite effective in making a lot of viewers invest in certain characters and carried them throughout Part 2. Sure, it's recently become a little less popular, but the fact still remains that everything was set out really well. Sasuke's hardly an 'emotionless prick', and your investment in the series is dependent on whether it 'clicks' with you or not.
