They have been, however it has been determined that at this point it is now irreversible and no move we make can stop this. From this alone I believe there is an increase of 1.2m expected. However as stated in the article this is just one area and we may be able to act to prevent the same from occurring in other areas. |

Tim's right. It's more the fact that they've realized that it's going to happen, and at this point it's been discovered to be irreversible. The ice sheets also are collapsing, and not simply melting on top. The real issue at hand is that when the ice sheets do eventually melt, the sea levels could rise up to an estimated 13 feet. 13 feet doesn't seem like a big issue, because people think "it's only 13 feet", but they fail to realize that most coastal cities are less than 10 feet above the current sea level, and there's even several cities that are even negative sea level. This will displace millions or perhaps over a billion people worldwide. Commerce with coastal cities will cease to exist because the coastal cities won't be habitable anymore. I dunno. It's not like they're going to wake up one morning and find half their city underwater. There's enough time to prepare and adjust. Should we be concerned about less oxygen in the air though if there is more water? Or maybe that will happen slowly enough that we adapt without really noticing? Heck the Sherpa in the Himalayan region did. Fastest recorded human evolution apparently. |
