Differences between techniques

So every fighter seems to have his or her own signature attack, but is there any real difference between them?

For example, a kamehameha is a continuous beam of energy, but so is galick gun, final flash, masenko, special beam cannon...etc. so is there really anything besides aesthetics, charging method and hand placement different between all types of energy beams? Or do they all exist just to add variety?

I wonder if the user can change the colour of their signature attack to add some more personal touches to it

Yes there are differences.

The color depends on whether the person is good or evil.

Techniques amplify a users power level. Some techniques amp the users power level more than other amps do.

Techniques like special beam cannon have more piercing power because the energy is focused to a small point.

Some techniques move slower like friezas supernova

they're different techniques cause some of them have different special attributes,ex, piercing attack, explosive attack ect.. and to make the manga more exciting.

Yup, Kamehameha is more powerful than Masenko, Galick Gun has worse amp than either but is easy to learn, and SBC has huge amp and is a piercing attack

Plenty of attacks have different properties, others are just generic attacks

I don't know if that "color" conclusion is accurate because that's more of an anime thing. All attacks in the manga seem to be either yellow, blue, white, or red, and don't really seem to correspond to the nature of the user. In addition to this, all auras (except for the Kaioken) are actually seen to be white, even Super Saiyan auras. The only exception I can think of is 100% Freeza's aura is purple.

As for the OP, some techniques also not only are different strengths but use different portions or types of energy as well. For example, the Genki Dama (Spirit Bomb) is mainly comprised of genki, which is only one of the three energies that make up what we know as ki. It also takes genki from surrounding sources instead of only taking it from the person forming it.

The Kikoho (Tri Beam) has a massive amp because it uses almost all the ki inside someone's body and focuses it tightly into the hands. This act of taking this amount of bodily energy being released in a single burst can be fatal to the user.

Some attacks are designed to pierce by focusing the ki into a singular point. The more tightly the ki is focused, the higher the power level of the attack is.
The Kamehameha is also able to do this, but the Kamehameha isn't designed to pierce like the Dodonpa or the Makakansappo (Special Beam Cannon) are.

Ok, everything here makes sense. The difference between tri beam and spirit bomb is quite obvious and I suppose I never thought about piercing vs explosive energy waves, but now that I think of Raditz, it makes sense. I suppose many different energy waves used by the characters are different in that regard yet many are also similar in that many are designed to explode on impact
