Sadly its on the news/day time TV semi regularly in the UK, (any time a new vaccine is rolled out or normally when its the time of the year to get children vaccinated). You see parents spouting the same old rubbish "There is no evidence this is any good / I don't know what this is for, so their not having it / I didn't have X so my child wont have it / some kid died from this vaccination last time etc etc". Many excuses not to, which all in all become counter productive and potentially very dangerous for the children. |

i don't think prepubescent children are actually capable of making important medical decisions for themselves. most kids, if given the choice to either get chicken pox, or get stuck with a needle, are going to choose to get chicken pox. chicken pox is seen as a rite of passage, and needles hurt. of course, shingles hurts worse, but kids aren't worried about a disease they aren't going to have to deal with until middle age or later. so yes, at least in the case of prepubescent children, it should be the parent's decision on what treatments they think are necessary, barring cases like irreversible cosmetic surgery procedures, like circumcision. because some vaccines aren't actually necessary, just preferable, like chickenpox. that said, if you don't want to follow the vaccination guidelines, then you shouldn't be able to go to public school. |

Exactly, thousands of scientific studies have refuted all of these issues and vaccines are the #1 most studied / tested medicines out there. So should not the children be guaranteed that protection? And as vaccination rates drop it causes even more problems. If not enough people get vaccinated they won't be as effective (even though a lot of parents who think like that rely on herd immunity) and it is then dangerous for everyone. At what point should it be something that is required? What is the difference between making it compulsory for public schools (where some people may not have a choice and are basically forced) and making it compulsory altogether? |
