There's a reason why incest is so heavily outlawed and even illegal. Most people (yes, you guys are all a minority) believe incest to be gross and wrong. You can try to make a point by saying its the same thing like gay marriage, but then I wonder why people are pushing for gay marriage to be legalized and not incest. You could say to each his own, but I'm very close to my sisters. Very close. I know everything about them. Romantical? No, a normal person really does not get attracted to their sister. |

The reason why incest is outlawed because it goes against the rules of society. I imagine a boy playing with a Barbie would be sick, disgusting and outlawed too. Some people can be sexually attracted to siblings. They're still perfectly normal people with an uncommon attraction. If it doesn't affect me, I'm all for it. |

https://yourlogicalfallacyis.com/bandwagon What's gross and not gross is subjective (I find the idea gross too), but it would help to know said reason as to why it's wrong. The gay liberation movement wasn't a thing until the '60s (in the USA at least). So, if we lived before or around then, would it be okay to dismiss gay relationships because we all found it gross? African Americans had no right to vote until the passage of the Fifteenth Amendment, so before then, was there good reason for the fact that they couldn't vote aside from society's racism? To the people who find it disgusting: How does it impact you for you to find it disgusting? Would it impact your everyday life / life at all if someone had romantic relations with a family member? How exactly would this change the world for the negative? Why would you even care? I personally have a s***load of other things to worry about rather than if someone I remotely know is dating their family member. And even if I found out they were, I'd be happy for them - They are streets ahead of most of us moaping around the one who "would've been" Edited by Tonneh, Apr 11 2014, 02:02 PM.

Yeah, why do you find it gross? The answer to that is "because I was told it was gross, therefor it is" It is exactly the same as "I was told gay people are wrong, therefor they are" the only difference is more and more gay people are around to the point where society is largely like well ok maybe it's not so bad. Lack of understanding and/or religion is why people have been so against both. It's just a relationship, you don't have to like it but just like heterosexuals probably don't like the thought of ever having homosexual relations, that's no reason to condone it. I think it should be illegal for families to reproduce solely through incest though generations down the line it pretty much guarantee's deformities, Wrong Turn style(I joke) which is pretty sick and selfish. People should be encouraged to have children with people outside their family but other than that just standard sex based laws should be applied. Regardless of who a person is you can be biologically attracted to them, if a boy going through puberty sees his attractive mother naked in the shower you can bet he'll get a boner. Biology doesn't discriminate so why should we? |

While I completely understand the delicacy of this topic, I can't help but point out that the use of the word "normal" is extremely redundant here (and in pretty much any debate) and doesn't validate anything. My thoughts on incest are pretty liberal. If two people feel attracted to each other to the point of wanting to have consensual sexual relations (consent being the key here) I think they should have the total freedom to do it without being judged. I can't lie and say that incest is something that doesn't make me uncomfortable because it does, but each case is different and full of specificities that can sometimes help diluting that discomfort I feel. |

I think it's wrong because it destroys the lines between family and romantic love. I don't know about anyone else but when I was in a relationship, I never lost the romantic feeling even after about two years. I do read about people staying with each other even after that feeling is gone but I never began to think of her as anything other than my girlfriend and love. Me dating a family member would forever destroy how I saw them as a family member. I'm not even thinking about society's views here.

On a personal level, I see it as wrong because I could never imagine myself looking at a family member like that. However, personal incredulity isn't justification for imposing my views on others, so I don't really have a problem with anyone else who actually participates in it. It makes me feel uncomfortable, but that's just that. |

Imo, personal actions are only wrong if they harm other people. That said, incest is only wrong if the partners make babies. It's a little weird yes, but it's not my place to judge. As long as they do everything in their power to prevent child-making then it's cool. Both partners have to be consenting adults, but that goes without saying.

This is going to sound really awful but, logically, I don't really see why the "incest is harmful to potential offspring" is a valid argument while no one questions those with hereditary conditions reproducing. Morally, it's totally awkward the more you think about it, but most people consider it at least a little immoral to pick and choose potential offspring based on their likelihood to be disabled. So why then would it be immoral to bring an incestial child into the world? But, ya know, on the flip side... It weirds me out. But that's a social construct and I can't give you a valid reason why it's not okay. I like the point someone up there made about the difference between family and lovers, though I suspect the vast majority of incest relationships aren't with direct family members, but cousins or lesser? I dunno about anyone else here, but my cousins were my friends growing up. They fit closer into the category socially than "family". We hung out like friends, we grew apart like friends, I see them occasionally as acquaintances...? My siblings, both of which are far older and we only share a mother, are completely different. Even if I disliked them, I'd feel bound to them, where as my cousins I have no tie with? I think this probably differs from family to family and different family structures. I think parent/child relationships are a terrifying idea though. I cannot get my head around that at all, but a lot of that is an age related thing. I have tremendous issues with relationships with 10+ age gaps, because I know how much I've grown mentally in ten years. Communication, understanding, intelligence... These are things I value when I communicate with people, a partner especially so. How can you have that with someone so much younger? You just can't. It's the same with friends. Past 10 years or so, the difference in understanding is just so wildly different you can't really gel properly? I have a couple of acquaintances who are more than 10 years my senior, who's opinions I respect and who I enjoy chatting with a couple of times a year when we meet, but I couldn't hang out with them and casually chat for long periods or time, or have them round for parties and... Ya know, It would just be odd? I got lost off track there... So when I see a much older person dating someone so much younger, ESPECIALLY if the younger one is below 20, I can't help assume the older person is not right mentally, or just seedy and doesn't care for communication. And that weirds me out personally. Edited by SaiyanHajime, Apr 12 2014, 12:24 PM.

Well, I do Sure it's unfair to basically ban people from having kids but if there's a great chance of them being deformed or badly ill in some way then having them is just freaking selfish "but we'll love it and look after it properly" So what? Still forcing someone in to the world who will always be different and probably looked down upon due to that, just because of wanting a child when there's adoption or surrogacy right there. It's doubtful both parents would have the same problem in their genes so with surrogacy the child is still pretty much the couples'. You can never know if the child will be ill or not but you're placing someones future even more so than usual on the flip of a coin, in my opinion that is just messed up. Selfish doesn't begin to cover it, having children is a want not a need. I doubt many people would be too ok with parent/child relationships, like if it's away from you then that's fine but if you go to your friends house and he and his mother start making out in front of you then that's just going to make a good 99.99% of people uncomfortable, at least until incest was common place in a society where it was fully legal. As long as there's some kind of etiquette to it. |

actually, i believe we should be implementing population control laws right about now. humanity is getting dangerously close to the limit of how many people this planet can feed. even if we start putting up self sustaining space colonies, you can't get enough people off the planet fast enough to make a meaningful difference. and yes, once you start talking about population control, you need to start thinking about who gets the odd 3rd kid that's needed to keep a steady population. a good place to start is to disqualify anyone who carries serious genetic defects, such as cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia, huntington's disease, down's syndrome, etc. of course, until we get to a greater understanding of what genes do what, it's pretty much impossible to narrow it down further than that. although if you want to get really nitpicky, you could also disqualify people with genes that increase the risk of cancer (such as that one breast cancer gene that all celebrities seem to have, or red hair). although honestly, i think incentives would be a better form of population control. like maybe give the people that have those bad genes a permanent tax break if they get sterilized without having children. in that case, the more minor defects like the cancer genes definitely wouldn't count. redheads are too sexy to get rid of. |

I dunno guys, where do you draw the line? If it's morally sound to reject an otherwise wanted child because it has downs syndrome, why not dyslexia? Forgetting the fact that downs varies drastically. Many of those with the condition have jobs and get on with life like anyone else. I just think it's cruel to judge. Everyone is different, and disabilities are kinda part of that natural variation. |

Since when is it morally sound to reject a child with Down syndrome? And actually, what has any of what you just said even got to do with incest? |
