What about adult women who have bodies that cannot handle childbirth? If they are too small or thin that it may break bones, is that a medical issue enough? |

@ Lunar: I suggest you look up the term "Strawman Fallacy before start throwing stuff out. Secondly, yes you are declaring the fetus more important. You are saying that the rights of the woman to abort it is less important than the rights of the fetus itself. It's like saying you're going to save the dog trapped on the sinking boat but not the full grown man. And heck at least the dog might have done something to make itself known. Might have had a family that loved it, might have done something socially. It's very hard to make a comparison for fetus to many things and make the fetus look better because it's literally one of the most useless things in the world. But you seem to have this ideology that all things deserve life. I do hope you're saving every last insect, every last animal, every last bacteria in the world then, because not only are all of those alive...all of them provide more than that fetus did. People abort females because its a social issue, something countries and places actually try to fight against. For example in China, do you know why the One Child Policy was integrated? It's because during the 1970s China had made a huge increase in its society by an increase in an industrial build up. This along with the fact that about 5-6 children were born per family lead to a massive increase in the population until it began to overrun China. Girls were being killed because of the social desire to have male heirs but the Chinese Government mind you outlaws this sort of action. Even after the One Child Policy was implemented, the increase in population still rose by a great amount. So yes, abortion here would actually be quite good. Less pregnancy and lowering the population rate in such a scenario here would be quite decent. ---- --- Women aren't stupid, if they don't want to get pregnant, they're going to do anything they can not to get pregnant. Abortions still costs a lot of money and why bother with all of that when we can use protection. But it is really infuriating for me to see all of you people acting like we need to give these fetus' chances when they haven't done anything at all and potentially provide negative impacts on the woman both physically, psychologically and socially. I made the point before some pages back. If birthing was as easy as sneezing, it wouldn't be a problem. There would be no physical issues, or psychological issues or social issues. You could sneeze out your baby and if you don't want it, hand it over to the doctors and go on your way. But its not that easy and yes as cruel as it might sound, there are some things more important than others. 1.) Pregnancy can lead to physical complications 2.) Pregnancy can lead to psychological complications 3.) Pregnancy can lead to social complications 4.) Pregnancy if not adopted leads to increase economical issues with raising the child. 5.) A child decreases relationship happiness until the age of when the child leaves. 6.) For thousands of years women were treated as nothing more than property of the man and their virginity nothing more than a product of the man's possession. 7.) Unlike today, population control was not an issue. 8.) Children in the past actually provided labor support for families and were well desired by families. It's very simple people. If a woman doesn't want to give birth, she shouldn't have to give birth. This "so called life" you all keep talking about will not be remembered nor is it wanted at all and it has not made a single impact on anyone and has not even reached some of the most basic stages of development. So yes a woman's right over her body and what is inside of her body is most important. Edited by EMIYA, Apr 3 2014, 01:03 PM.

@Krystal That would be a justifiable cause for abortion. If a women's body can't handle child labor, she shouldn't be forced to do so. I don't have a problem with abortion if there's a reasonable reason for it. I do not consider the "It's my body, I should be allowed do whatever I want" thing a justifiable cause, because women's bodies are connected to other forms of life, unlike men's. @Brofist your insect & bacteria statement is completely flawed. There's no way to save every last insect, animal and every bacteria Just like there's no way to save every fetus. And plus how could a law against killing animals, bacteria, and insects possibly be enforced? It can't. A law limiting abortion to only women who have reasonable reasons for abortion, would save the life of many (not all) fetuses. As for the effects on women,if having a child is so terrible then how come there's billions of people in the world? You're making it sound like having a child is a case worse than death, which clearly isn't the case. |

I'm putting the point of animals and bacteria because all of those things can provide more than a fetus does and so if your going to treat a fetus with more respect than a woman's own body where the thing is feeding off of, you better show the same respect for everything else. That means you better not step on a single ant, you better not kill a single animal (food or otherwise.) Also while back on that quick subject of rape. Yes, it is true that the majority of people who are raped is done so by a person they knew. In the west at least, 50% of females can be expected to be sexually assaulted sometime in their life. Or as the statistics point out, one in two females. Which basically means every girl that's born is basically a coin flip. Will they be sexually assaulted or will they not be sexually assaulted? Those are some terrible statistics for female. The reason the world is so populated right now is because of health. In the past, people had to have more children because early deaths were so prominent. Once we discovered vaccines and we started dying less from diseases and more from chronic illnesses it was a lot easier to birth children and raise them without them dyming. In short in the developed countries the mortality rate of children dropped considerably and at the same time the mortality rate of the elderly also dropped considerably. Humans aren't designed to live 80 or 90 or 100 years old. Our bodies start to break down, decay and become much weaker at a certain point and in nature if this happened, we would die very easily because it's a matter of the strength. But because of our medication and stuff we can extend these lives of ours passed what we're usually capable of. So its no wonder that population of the earth has increased drastically to around 7 billion+ people right now. There's very little holding us back. Edited by EMIYA, Apr 3 2014, 05:38 PM.

I'll agree with you on that one. They definitely provide more than fetuses. (Until they're born, that is). I don't kill animals or anything, but I do step on ants from time to time. It's kinda hard not to lol. I'm sure everyone does. And for the rape thing, had no clue that it's gotten that bad here in the west. That's really mind boggling. & wow, I was completely unaware of how overpopulated we are. |

Well it more often than not does irreversibly damage them in various ways and if there are complications can just kill them. It can limit a woman of today's lifestyle a lot they used to just be baby making machines but now women can have jobs and having a baby might end up making them unable to work(after it's born I mean) so it's not fair to forcefully limit a woman's lifestyle like that. If a female isn't fully developed then it definitely does damage them and their future growth so while getting pregnant at 16-18 is legal it can be a very bad idea and if it happens accidentally it's an even better idea to abort it there are enough people in the world as it is without bringing more unwanted children in to it. It's not so much that women are weak that pregnancy is extremely taxing it can basically wreck your spine having all that weight ruin your posture for 5-6 months it takes women years to recover from it fully. |

@Steve Like I said in previous posts, if there's any complications that puts the mother at risk, or if the child's a minor, or if they're a victim of rape, they should be allowed to have an abortion. & It is fair to limit a women's lifestyle like that because in a lot of cases, the women chose to get pregnant. I never said that women were weak. But that is true. I'd imagine it to be really taxing on a women. But that's not a viable reason to kill a fetus, imo. |

I mean complications like if the baby will have to be cut out of the woman or is breached, you can't predict what will happen at the actual birth. Stuff like hereditary illness is somewhat predictable but beyond that you never know how it will go. If they did choose in an awkward situation like potential death, growth stunting or if they have problems that will be passed on like AIDS it's fair to heavily suggest abortion is the better option but not to force it. I don't think there are many abortion cases where the woman aimed to get pregnant in the first place though it usually just happens accidentally and they don't know what to do because obviously it's a huge, very daunting change. So abortion because they couldn't handle it not just for fun. |

Just a random point to whoever said earlier that stretch marks go away? Yeah, they don't. I have a mother who works out every day, is in great shape, used all that stupid cream stuff, and still has horrible stretch marks. I've also dated very healthy women who work out and have attempted to get rid of them, and they never go away. It's always a permanent, ugly reminder. (I don't find them ugly, of course, but it can be damaging to a woman's self-esteem). |

@Steve those are all very reasonable reasons to get an abortion. I'd have no problem with someone getting an abortion because of them. |

I think that's where one of the biggest misconceptions lie, and I think it's the fault of both sexes. Women fight for abortion so ardently that it's completely understandable that men think it's because we WANT to have abortions, but nobody really goes to the clinic for fun. It's usually the results of a LOT of heartbreak and tough decisions. Because men can't have abortions, they may not understand the necessity or pain behind them, and assume that we just want a have to have sex all over the place. |

@Krystal I'm 99% sure that's the main reason why most women fight for abortions(under any cirmustance) so ardently. I really don' think it's a misconception at all. & I do understand the necessity and pain behind them. I just think they should only have them if they have a viable reason for doing so. |

You understand it as a necessity or as sexual freedom? |

Ohh ok. Another thing is that abortion is extremely expensive and pretty painful, so it doesn't offer any more sexual freedom than the proper use of condoms, birth control, or even Plan B. So it really is a last resort in almost every case. |
