Informative and insightful look into how reality tv is anything but real. |

Even though it was just a film, I still think the Truman show is the closest thing to reality TV than anything that has been put on TV since the creation of the genre. The film's 16 years old, and no reality show has even come close to being "real" </rant> |

Obviously there are some serious ethical problems with raising a person inside an artificial world and keeping it a secret from him. Reality tv is fake because real life is boring. It's like Mr Brooker said in the clip, they had to fast forward to something good because all they were doing were chatting about nothing. I think reality tv as we know it is a perfectly acceptable concept for entertainment purposes but they should probably change it's label to something more fitting. I'm pretty sure in the past it was known as fly on the wall television. I don't see much wrong with that. At least it isn't lying about how true it is. |

True regarding the ethical problems surrounding what happened in Truman, but I found that before he discovered that he was being watched, he was just being him, with the producer simply throwing scenarios at Truman and seeing how he would deal with it. From what I have watched of reality tv (truthfully, I havent watched that much, so im likely to be biased on this), people tend to act differently when they know the camera is on them. Furthermore, with the editing techniques you've shown, the powers that be can decide to portray contestants in whatever way benefits the show, which kind of undermines the "reality" aspect of things |

I'll always remember this one season of I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here! In that show, like many others, the public had to vote to save someone, so the person with the least number of votes is out. Anyway the first person voted out was this guy that pretty much no one in the public even remembered was in there because he did nothing. Then all the "Celebrities" involved in the show were stunned because apparently he did all this funny stuff, but of course the show was only an hour long edit with presenter segments and adverts so none of it got through. I was only a kid but that was when I realised how bulls*** the whole thing was. |

I think the only legit thing used to be Big Brother, the main show was obviously edited when it showed the tasks and stuff but you could watch the live streams of people sleeping...so if you were that kind of person you could see it was real. Fairly sure it isn't these days though, the celebrity ones sure aren't. I guess singing based ones are probably fairly real too. |

No the singing ones are fake too. Judges comments and contestants background stories influence the audiences decisions. The audience is basically manipulated from day one. This is why only certain types of singers ever win. Yes celebrity big brother is as fake as all of those other reality shows. I realised this when a photo was leaked of a man holding up cue cards for them. Edited by Pelador, Mar 17 2014, 12:11 PM.

Well, the actual singing part is real I mean not that all of it is in the X Factor when they go stay at one of the judges houses or whatever you never see what's happening, obviously going to be giving them pointers like crying for sympathy Yeah, people don't seem to understand that celebrities are just people they're not all especially interesting they sit around and watch TV too when they have time. I hate ones that chronicle the lives of celebrities like Peter Andre and Katie Price they're all so forced, it's baffling that people give half a crap about it. |

Yeah probably not, letting poor people in gives them a good image but would also show paparazzi and whatnot where they live. |

Yeah in the Australian version they don't even pretend they are any more, they just take them to whatever city they feel like. I think one year one judge went to that island Richard Branson owns. |
