I feel like you are probably right, but we never got a good explanation of Mystic Gohan's potential unlock and how it worked, which is why I used the term "concretely". That is what really bugs me about it, Gohan's potential had been built up from the BoZ, and the resolution was so anti-climatic. And again, even in the manga, I didn't feel like his reaction to Buu (be it even keeled, or however you view it) felt right. Even if the well was empty, I feel like Gohan would have been enraged and made a last stand, not lose his guard like that. But that's just my take, at the end of the day you have to go with what Toriyama put on the page. Doesn't mean you have to agree with it, though.
