Buu arc controversy

So, I was talking to Ultimate Trunks about it and we agreed that the Buu arc feels a little isolated from the rest of the series in a few different ways.

•In the buu arc, there's little to basically no connections that tether everything that happens or who they're fighting to previous sagas. for example, the saiyan arc played off of Goku and his tail, which was a bigger thing in dragonball. Without the events in the saiyan arc, the frieza arc would never have happened. Without the frieza arc, cell would not have frieza's cells. Granted, it didn't make much of a difference as far as relevance to plot or story or whatever, but it was still nice to see those little connections and easter eggs.

•The buu arc is very linear, and almost black and white. When you watch it from beginning to end, it's a line of progression. not to say that any other saga isn't, but the way this one is played out is very different from the others. buu comes, is too strong. events happen in order with little transition time or character development to enjoy.

And the last thing is sort of both a gripe and a nice touch, and it's the fact that the buu arc REALLY is isolated. it's 7 years later, it's completely separated from everything else. regardless of the villans they'd faced up until then, buu still would've happened at that time.

any way, i think it's something worth talking about. what do you guys think? are these things good or bad?

Without the characters going through their trials/tribulations up until that point, they never would have gotten powerful enough to be real fuel for popping that egg.

Also, the reason the Buu arc seems so black and white to you is probably because for 90% of the arc, they're facing the same enemy; Buu.

I don't see the Buu arc as any more isolated than the Artificial Human arc... both are only really required because Vegeta exists [on Earth].

Yeah I agree. I enjoy watching buu saga but the story really has nothing to do with the Z fighters

Well, I'm in the camp that doesn't care very much for the Buu saga, and I actually think it's because of that isolation you mentioned. I felt like the series had already hit its high point and been resolved as it was, so Toriyama didn't really have anything left to carry over and just sort of made it up as he went with very little planning. Your first point is my biggest gripe actually

So where I stand with it is pretty much this: the isolation makes me feel happy to just rewatch the series and stop at Cell most of the time. If you like the Buu saga, it's there and stands on its own, and if you don't you can still get a pretty satisfying resolution without it with Goku stayind dead and Gohan taking the reins. Just my take, the Buu saga has always been the most polarizing part of DBZ fandom.
