Appreciating Kai; Not a Z vs Kai thread

I had not watched Kai until very recently. I was content with FUNI's first dub (to be referred to as DBZ in this post). I liked it even though a lot of others have said the voice acting is bad and the script is bad, two things I didn't agree with.

Well recently I have been introducing the series to a couple people, and I decided to show them Kai over DBZ (I had just ordered BD Kai) because what I do know of Kai is that it's pacing is much better.

What I had not realized is that the voice acting and the script really are superior, at least for me. Two parts in particular stand out for me: piccolo's speech before training Gohan, and Vegeta's speech to Cell while he performs the Final Flash. In Kai, Piccolo's speech is so well done as it excites the heck out of me. I can't explain the difference, but if you watch both clips from Kai and DBZ you'll understand. And when Vegeta performs the Final Flash in Kai, Sabat sounds the coolest he has ever sounded. If you haven't seen that Kai clip, watch it.

Now, even though I don't want to turn this into a DBZ vs Kai thread, and though I know I'm going to be perturbing a lot of people, I have to say the music is far better in Kai. Faulconer's tracks are great individually- Android 16 theme and Perfect Cell theme will always be on my playlists -they are not very cohesive, in my opinion. They are just all across the board sound-wise, and to make it worse, they are cropped in the weirdest way in Z; it is really un-immersive for me. On the other hand, copyright issues aside, I have found Kai's soundtrack to be wonderful. The music corresponds with the show's content really well: when there are motivational speeches, the music gradually becomes more intense in a build-up fashion; when there is a fight, the music amps with each blow, etc. Not to mentions it's all very cohesive.

I just want to say I'm glad I chose Kai to show these people because I feel like DBZ would have been a mistake. And because Kai has been successful in drawing them in, I just wanted to say I appreciate it.

Well that's your opinion I guess. I didn't like a lot of the changes in Kai (particularly Gohan's voice) and I guess the original DBZ grew on me.

Besides, I already read the Manga which is more canon than the Japversion and Kai so I don't see a problem.

Personally I have to disagree with a couple things. The kai script may be better because it's more true to manga. Kai is faster paced too because most of the filler is gone. But for me, the voice acting and music in the original is way better than kai. I can't stand gohan's voice in kai and I don't like sabat's vegeta voice in kai as much as he sounded in the original. Friezas new voice isn't that great in my opinion either

That's what happens when you have a more experienced voice cast, with even some much-needed replacements (Freeza), all working with a script that isn't horrible and under good direction.

Glad to see another KAI fan! I probably like it more because I started Dragonball Z from reading the manga, then watched the anime, and seeing as KAI is closer to the manga I'd think that's probably why I like it more. Frieza's voice was still bad, but it was better than the original to me. I also liked how Gohan sounded like a little kid.. and I just don't like how in Z he sounds exactly like his father when he was young, not sure why honestly..

I haven't seen Z Kai, but I'm a big fan of Kai, the Japanese version. Much faster pace.

I can see your point, and I too appreciate, and prefer, much of DBZ. For instance, I loved Steph's perfomance as super saiyan 2 Gohan. While I have the whole BD set of Kai, I'm also collecting all of the BD DBZ seasons (which get a lot if hate, but I love); I want both in my library.

So what I'm trying to do in this topic is share my appreciation of Kai (i.e. A novice-friendly version of Dragon Ball I can share with people). I realize the critiques I made in my first post are subjective, but I attempted to make them with the point of view of someone new to the series.

Voice acting, direction, sound job (sans music) and pacing was better. For me, that's it.

I'm glad I had both. When I was a kid, the voice acting was perfect because it's more "THIS IS A BAD GUY. THIS IS A GOOD GUY." And the slow pacing is also great because it was great having a bew epsisode come on right after school for a year. Now that I look more at performance and production values, Kai makes me equally happy. I love them both. :)

Gohan's and Bulma's voices are the only things I really find annoying (though not completely annoying) in Kai. The voice acting is top notch (I especially like how Frieza sound a bit more sophisicated) and the soundtrack is highly above proficient.

That being said I still like the original version better. Faulconcer themes hit me right at the soul especially Goku's SSJ/SSJ3 Theme, Vegeta's SSJ Theme, Piccolo and Kamicolo's Theme, and Android 17 vs Piccolo theme. When they started playing during fights/power ups things got intense. Kai has similar effects but I don't feel as hyped. I liked the fillers and the filler arcs so pacing isn't really an issue for me. And though Chris Aryes plays a better Frieza by far, Linda Young is still pretty good in my book.

Combine Kai's voice acting with Faulconer's music (like with this video) will be double fun.

P.S Though I watched Z as a kid I don't remember much about it. My first TRUE run with DBZ was when Kai first came out in Nicktoons.

The only thing I will NEVER appreciate is the lack of a driving episode.

On a similar note, I will be a bit disappointed if they take out the filler in the Gohan/Videl/high school episodes.

I wouldn't be disappointed if they took out any filler in the Boo arc, to be totally honest. But I've dealt with so much stupid crap involving that filler that I'm more biased than you guys.

I am Always Right... Unless When I'm Wrong

Completely agree. I was very impressed listening the voice acting and the script in Kai. The dialogue was more mature and for some reason sounded "smarter" to me. Like realistic if you will. I also agree about showing Kai to people to introduce them to the series since its pacing is faster. Even as a kid it bugged the hell out of me how slow the story took to progress. 'member Goku and Freeza? How many months was that single fight? Still kinda long in Kai but at least they removed the filler. And I think a person seeing the show for the first could be turned off by all the filler and will begin to lose interest, assuming they're not a kid anymore and just want to see fights and no story/character development. I love both dubs and that doesn't go without saying they both have their flaws, but I think Kai is the superior dub. Especially since they tried to fix all the errors from the first dub.
