I was just thinking about when goku first goes ssj on namek. Did goku know that he was gonna go ssj, did he just have a feeling that it was going to happen? Or was he just trying to power up as much as he could, and by chance he broke the ssj wall? Or was he just getting angry because he knew that he was beat at that point, and he by chance went ssj? what are your guys thoughts?

I know exactly what I'm up against, Frieza, and let me tell you, I'm not worried.

His best friend exploded... and he got really, really angry. His rage made him transform.

He did not know SSJ existed. He did not expect/plan to transform. It just happened as a side effect of his sudden paradigm shift.

I guess he knew it existed since Vegeta never stopped talking about it once. Though, to him, his transformation should have happened unexpected. It should have been a really new experience for him, even if he wasn't all there mentally-wise to know 100% what was happening to him. All he knew was an explosion of anger and steadily losing his original character and self.

The thing about Goku is that he didn't care about the transformation as long as he had the power to defeat the one who killed his best friend. We saw some of the same anger when he killed Tambourine. The difference is, back then he knew he had the power to defeat his foe, while against Freeza he had to dig deep to find it.

Goku knew he felt powerful. Goku knew something had happened once he snapped. But whether it was super saiyan or his inner potential awakening or the remaining energy of the spirit bomb entering his body...
as long as he could exact justice, he was satisfied. Though of course, I bet in the back of his head when he felt the power, he knew he was a Super Saiyan.

Post-transformation, sure. But pre-transformation and during... he was just really angry and that happened to make him a Super Saiyan. He had no idea it was waiting for him.
