Are Private Contractors and Mercenaries a good Alternative?

I say no. Soldiers are placed under the safety net of the Geneva Conventions, both for uses against and for them. Mercenaries and PMC's are technically not under Geneva Conventions control. Which allows the ability to circumvent what the Conventions prevent. It just seems like a bad idea to send in Mercs when Soldiers are more relatable. Besides, there is always the possibility the Mercs you paid get paid better by your enemies. There is an old saying I remember:

A Mercenary's trust lasts as long as the coin you hold in your hand.
A Shadow is merely Darkness in the presence of Light

no, mercenaries are not a viable alternative. they are more expensive than soldiers and are not bound by the same treaties.
list of canon sources:

the DB manga, and the Dr. Slump manga as it applies to the crossover during the rra saga.

list of non canon sources:

everything else, regardless of origin, format, or quality.

for those that blindly follow word of god

They should only be used for dirty work. It's then easier for a country to deny it was anything to do with their own army.

Mercenaries are more a "jack of all trades" soldier, and they're not bound by treaties or laws.

I personally believe that they're a viable alternative for matters of immediate national security. However, if you can have a special force like SEAL teams that the US has, then there's no reason to hire mercenaries.

Well mercenaries can't be held accountable for anything but official special forces groups can. Pretty useful if you want to cause a ruckus for your own political gain.
