Why, generally speaking, do more women play casual games (puzzle games, Candy Crush, The Sims, etc.) while more men are inclined to play "hardcore games?" Is it because of the way that society has structured gender? Is there some psychological reason behind it? I'm curious to hear outside opinions and experiences! |

Generally speaking, I think it largely is due to the market. Most "hardcore gamers" are best averaged to a 30-35 year old male. Knowing this, most traditional "hardcore games" are marketed towards them, in order to buy the product. However, "casual games" are marketed to essentially everywhere who has access, which creates a more broad list of games to play, most of which could be considered minigames in "hardcore games". It is a matter of the market that drives the game creation and sales more than anything. Or course, this is largely only true regarding videogames or PC games. When we get to tabletop games it becomes much harder, due to the seperate types of tabletop games that exist. |

I just don't think women naturally like violence. In the US it's different because our culture is so overly dramatized, and everything is made out to be glamorized and a competition. This is the reason why people in the US are so aggressive. Women in the US are programmed to be violent, even if it goes against nautral instincts. Women can't go off on some person for no legitimate reason and risk unnecessary injury, because biologically, females generally have a larger responsibility then males do. All that males are required to do is fight for females, so that they can further their bloodline. Females are actually charged with taking care of the young. 10,000 years ago, you couldn't really can't take care of a baby if you have one broken arm. It's not so much that you got a broken arm, it's why. If you got a broken arm defending your young, than it makes sense, but if you got a broken arm from picking a fight with another female, that's just stupid. With that being said, normal society contributes, but it's founded in the way that humans are in general. Edited by Ketchup Revenge, Feb 13 2014, 08:45 AM.

Well its true that most women don't play "hardcore game"......But some women do play(or used to) ,such as back in 2003-2006 there used to be a women's/girls team/clan that participated in WCG and played cs 1.6 tournaments.......but that was a long time back,I don't know currently if there are any women/girls team that participate in WCG or any other tournaments.....

Depends on if the girl has been exposed to specific gaming types in the past, and is actually interested in those games. I think that most girls view video games as a "guy" activity that isn't fit for girls. Like just two days ago, a woman I work with was trying to tease a group of guys including myself about playing, "World of minestarwar battlestar galactica star wars craft" It was later revealed that she wasn't the brightest bulb in the box, but besides the obvious attempt to relate to what she thinks she knows, she clearly never played any games or was ever exposed to them. |

I think it's society. Society tells girls that video games are for men and that those puzzle games are for girls. My sister likes those puzzle games which I hate, and she hates the video games that I love. |

I think it's probably a bit of everything mentioned so far really. Mostly though I'd say it's to do with aggression, games are a good outlet for men, at least what people call "hardcore" games, What does that even mean? Never finished a game of Sudoku can't be bothered working it all out so I consider it hardcore Of all the girls I know the only ones that actively play games are the more quiet ones, the rest are more interested in going out with friends/getting boyfriends so I'd say it's a collection of things rather than just one, if a girl hasn't many friends or has a lot of free time on her hands she'll probably play games and eventually get in to hardcore ones. Maybe a brother/father/boyfriend will introduce them to them? |

I have slowly been introducing my gf into Warhammer 40,000. If that game doesn't count as hardcore, being a thirty-plus year old tabletop wargame, nothing does. But so far, what is getting her attention is the lore. |

This. The stereotype is breaking down so the number of girl gamers is increasing. |

Despite the changes in society, I still find it hard here to talk openly about gaming amongst peers. The guys at college are the usual sort, BF4 players and steam users who seem to always have group sessions. I would like to tag along and be a part of that group, sooo much, but then a matter of conflicts of interests occurs; I'm no BF player nor have I ever used Rust or TF2. I prefer stuff like AC, Pokémon, brawlers like Smash Bro's or Playstation All-Stars and tower defences like Q-Force, Plants Vs Zombies & Dragon Rush, none of which with the exception of the obvious choice, AC, are played by others there. What games my friends actually play are usually throwaway apps like Candy Crush, Temple Run and Flappy Bird. Some day I would like this stigma to change, but I guess for the moment at least things will remain the same. |

The easiest way to break the stigma is change the market. Currently the average gamer is best represented by a 30-35 year old male. Changing this average gamer profile will change the games being made. |

This is basically my line of thought. I view it as completely societal. Strip away societal pressures and expectations and men and women would view violence the same way, generally speaking. |

Games are being made to sell to an audience like every other product. The new GTA estimates a little under 15% of the owners of the game are female. They say that's high I don't know but it's obvious who they're trying to attract. Most app like games you're speaking of target people with cell phones and similar devices altogether because they have a larger numer of people with the hardware to begin with. Mainstream console sellers don't have that luxury. |

I wish I knew the perfect answer to this. I play games like a hardcore gamer, but I only play 2-3 games. I think it has more to do with competition cause the only games i play are LOL, COD, and Madden. I think it is easier socially for guys to play hardcore games with no repercussion image wise when it takes more for a female so they never venture into the hardcore side. Simply my analysis. |

The Sims is not a casual game, that game can get to crazy levels of depth, I know plenty of males who play that game as well, it's not a game you can just pick up and dive right into, there are mechanics you have to learn, wouldn't call it a casual game because of that. To me, a casual game is one you can pick up and jump straight into without much knowledge of what to do. That one mentioned game aside, I think casual games have moved on in their marketing as well to go for general mobile users, at one point they did seem to mostly be aimed at a female audience, but now just generally to people with a mobile. There could be many hardcore female gamers but admitting to it can lead to a lot of hate in some communities. |
