I've often wondered about this. I don't really think it means "Pure Good", because "good" as we understand it is really non-specific, and dictated by the culture, time and society you live in. "Good" isn't something stagnant, therefore I don't think it's likely to be that. So, what exactly does it mean to be "pure hearted"? |

Being "generally a good person," or at least "not being a total dirtbag." Maybe with a "not any more, at least" appended to the description for people like Vegeta. |

I think pure would mean that you are either 100% of one side, or the other. For example, Super Saiyans needed a pure heart to transform, right? Goku had a heart of pure good, he had no dormant evil within. Vegeta on the other hand said that his heart was pure evil when he transformed. So I think having a pure heart just means conpletely one or the other. |

The concept of good and evil as our society knows it today seems to exist and is important in Dragon Ball. Akkuma could explode people by making the evil inside them grow and explode, and there are creatures literally made of pure evil. "The Namek" couldn't turn into Kami because he had evil in his heart, and when he expelled it in the form of King Piccolo, that was pretty much evil as we know in our society. Good and Bad seem to be stagnant concepts in the Dragon World, as opposed to the real world, were it is related to culture, as you said. Some times we shouldn't apply real world logic to Dragon Ball, cuz' it doesn't really work. I believe the concept of "pure-heart" in Dragon Ball has indeed to do with what we would consider "pure-good" in today's society. I like to ignore Vegeta's claims of being pure evil (please correct me if this is only a dub thing), because i don't believe he was one hundred percent evil at that time. The whole "Super Saiyans have to be pure" seems a bir far-fetched after the Freeza arc. I do find some inconsistencies in the whole "pure-good" thing. In the early arcs of Dragon Ball, people couldn't climb the Kintoun (you need to be pure to climb it) if they had perverted toughts. Even if you were not evil and didn't really do bad things in your life, you couldn't climb it. Even then, in BoG, guys with a past full of murderous acts like Vegeta are considered pure enough to help forming the Super Saiyan God. I know Vegeta is a good guy in BoG, but it does seem to contradict that early arcs where "pure" was a much more strict concept. Edited by Topographic Oceans, Jan 25 2014, 10:14 PM.

Pretty much with SuperSaiyan2 on this one. Having a pure heart means that you have no doubts within you. You have steady goals, one ethos, have confidence and know your own self. Edited by Andro, Jan 25 2014, 10:23 PM.

That doesn't make sense though because the concept of "good" is entirely subjective to time period and culture. For example, in my opinion, Goku blowing off his family to train all the time is not good, and rather selfish. And we know the purity of heart thing doesn't apply because Kid Trunks was a Super Saiyan, and there's no way he's pure hearted. Edited by Ketchup Revenge, Jan 26 2014, 02:32 AM.

The concept of good is indeed relative to the period were we live and the culture, but i don't think it works like that in the Dragon Ball world. "Good" and "Bad" seem to be pretty objective and stagnant concepts in the series, as opposed to real life. The author probalby had a slightly different standart of good, different enough to consider Goku and Vegeta pure during BoG. |

I believe that pure hearted like you said isn't 100% good, because its non specific. Now if I had to say what it means in DragonBall world, I would say it has to do with those thinks: -Care for you're people, and fight for good. -To devote you're life for the shake of others and putting it on the line, for the shake of he's loved ones. At least that's what I received to be, I got this because of Piccolos quote on Majin Vegeta and Gokus Charatcer himshelf, and I don't think I can say anything else, because Buu Arc Vegeta against Kid Buu was considered a "good guy" in the DBZ universe, I think those thinks fits well . |
