I am with you 100% on this. It was fine for Dragon Ball (and really good), not for DBZ in my opinion anyway. I know purists get all ticked off about this, but Toei didn't consult Toriyama in the VA casting decisions, it's not like there is a definitive statement of "Yes, this is how Goku should sound!", so it's all a matter of preference. As someone who has taken Japanese courses and can speak it conversationaly, when I hear that voice I hear a middle aged woman trying to sound like a man. I actually liked it better before I studied the language, I think not understanding it helps to mask that quality in some ways. Anyway, to the point that Brofist made about anime having more and better quality dialogue/voice acting now, I have to respectfully disagree. I just don't think people tend to watch the deeper or more dialogue heavy shows as much these days when they go through those lists of "10 greatest anime from the 80's" or whatever. Just check out any of Tomino's work (the classic Gundams, Ideon, Aura Battler Dunbine), Leiji Matsumoto's work (Captain Harlock, Galaxy Express 999, etc.) or early Gainax for some great examples. In particular, Space Runaway Ideon had some of the best voice acting of any series I've encountered, but I guess differences of opinion are what make a horse race, so to speak. I actually think the trend has been going in the other direction since the late 90's (with English dubs getting much better while the quality of a lot of the Japanese VA work has gone down) so I find it interesting someone would have the opposite take. But, I respect it for sure, it's just that sometimes people see things differently I guess. Edited by Ben, Jan 23 2014, 12:44 AM.

It's pretty obvious Toriyama approves of Nozawa for adult Goku. I believe there's an interview on how much he likes Nozawa for the entire Son family.

@ Ben. To each their own. Mind you I haven't exactly seen too many animes in the 80's early 90s so my knowledge on that is relatively low at this point. I just know that there are some subtle and not so subtle difference between them. |

Korean Goku is the GOAT(Nostalgia talking because honestly his voice is deep. Kid Goku was high pitch as hell but Adult Goku had a deep a*** voice) |

Toriyama did personally select Masako Nozawa to play Goku: http://www.kanzenshuu.com/production/toriyama/ |

I'm saying AS AN ADULT. In other words, he wasn't brought in to re-assess all of the VA's when Z started and say "Yes, this is how Goku sounds." She just kept the job.
Just playing Devil's Advocate here, what would you expect him to say after all the success the TV series had? She was horrible but please keep giving me money? Edited by Ben, Jan 23 2014, 01:13 AM.

Nozawa is my favorite Goku. I also like her Gohan and her Goten. I only take issue with her Bardock. The guy is a evil space pirate, it doesn't make sense for him to sound like a child. The voices of the japanese version are a bit eccentric, but that's part of why i like them. I know some people might find the japanese version's quietness unerving some times, but for me it's quite the opposite. The fact that people can't blink in the Funimation dub without music playing in the background or someone doing a random inner monlogue is what bothers me. Some scenes are kinda ruined by it, like Gohan's transformation at the Cell games. In the original, that scene is beautiful, and the soundtrack is just great. In the american version he just starts an inner monologue, that ruins the whole thing. The only American dub i truly like is the Kai dub. The voices sounded kinda off and exaggerated in the original Funi dub, but it looks like all the VAs have matured and finally understood their roles by the time they dubbed Kai. Also, it has a awesome soundtrack. I usually watch Kai in english, because the Brazillian dub sucks (the brazillian kai dub, the original dub is great) and i am a bit to lazy to read the subs in the japanese version some times. On your second point, I actually agree with you 100%. By and large, I do prefer the Japanese VA's, the adult members of the Son family being the exception for me. Just let Nozawa do kid Gohan and Goten and I'm 100% good with that, but not re-casting that voice is just odd to me. I think this is just one of those debates that will never end. |

I have this little snippit from the TV Anime Guide: Dragon Ball Tenkaichi Densetsu:
Honestly, the assumption that Toriyama would lie is a bit of a conjecture. Toriyama likes Nazawa for Goku an any point during his life. |

I'm not saying he lied, I'm just saying you have to think critically here. The show was successful, the VA was already cast, you don't mess with a winning formula. And I'm sure he "liked' her voice, but until you find me some statement along the lines of "The producers wanted to re-cast Goku when Z started to sound more like a man, but I said no, Nozawa is my Goku!" I feel like there is room for doubt. And honestly, I think Toriyama made a bunch of bone headed decisions in the Buu Saga, even if he expressly said that her voice was his ideal adult Goku my take would just be that he made a bad decision that I disagree with. I love Kouta Hirano and Hellsing too, but I think that manga may have one of the worst endings ever, it doesn't mean I suddenly dislike Hirano or the whole thing. |

Whether or not he wanted to keep doing what was popular isn't really important here. He claims he hears Masako's voice whenever he imagines Goku talking whether he be adult or child. He's clearly a fan of it, regardless of the fact he didn't authorize the decision to keep Masako as adult Goku.

I don't like it, but it fits his character perfectly. Goku's a grownup with a childlike mind at times and his Japanese VA shows that perfectly. |
