I posted a blog post a few minutes ago, but I think this issue is more pressing, and I'd like to hear what some of you all have to say, since some of you know a lot about psychology and the brain and such.. My girlfriend has severe anxiety and moderate depression (her depression has been less precedent lately). Here's my actual blog post. If you have any questions to clear some things up, please feel free to ask. Spoiler: click to toggle

I don't really know the science, but I can say I have anxiety and depression, so I have experience in how things feel and have had panic attacks, although never heard voices telling me to do something, it's usually an odd thought that comes up, thoughts can be hard to ignore, but I often have distractions like a soft toy. Onto the point about doctors, I don't know what it's like over there for mental health conditions but I had no problem with my doctor and never did I hear the word "crazy" in the process of getting help, it has helped me a great deal with medication and therapy but it hasn't gone away and many triggers for attacks still exist. One key point to remember when helping someone though is to not make it your problem as well, try not to get frustrated, it will come across in your words and body language, one of my greatest fears is to not be a burden to anyone, so if it seems like someone is worried about me or frustrated with helping me, I will just pretend that I am better and hide it from them, in the long term, that makes things worse. I also have bad anxiety. It's not completely crippling, but it is difficult to deal with and is worse than normal person's. I've thought about seeking help with it, but I've learned to deal with it on my own. It's not perfect, but it's not as unmanageable as it once was. My anxiety has literally held me back from doing a lot of things. A lot of people have that luxury of not having to worry about a lot of things, but I don't. I've always had problems with anxiety. I had a panic attack once at school. I thought I was having a heart attack. Not pleasant but luckily for me a teaching assistant was with me and explained what was happening. That's also when I discovered what anxiety was. Usually my anxiety either manifests itself into either a fit of rage where I struggle to calm down for ages or I go within myself and visit my own little world. I.e my safe place.

I only read bits of that (not being lazy being r...being really tired, there's proof...tired and everything is blurry so reading much is a no no) but that doesn't sound like it's just anxiety and depression. Definitely go see a doctor the voices bit isn't very normal, anxiety can manifest itself in many ways but that could be something else that depression and anxiety is triggering. I guess you can't really force her if you threw her in a doctors office she'd probably break down mentally, I would and my anxiety isn't that bad so all you can do is convince her. For lack of a better way to put it she doesn't care about herself that much, as in she'd rather suffer than have to suffer a doctor but presumably she cares about you and her family so either you all convince her or make her feel like she has to go. For my own good I refuse to do basically everything but if someone makes me feel guilty it's doable at a basic level, so there's one angle you could try, she might be in the same boat. With this kind of problem "thinking about it" is probably more like stalling and trying to think of a way to get out of it because oh my god people/doctors, perhaps she is considering it but there's a good chance she's not. With something like anxiety it's easy to convince yourself that you don't need to talk to people or get help, what would a stranger know? If you don't have people pushing you to do something you'll probably never do it because that's the easy/safe option. But that said don't be putting a sack over her head and locking her in a room with a bunch of doctors or talk about it constantly |
