Battle Power Lists are Pointless.

Why do people, including myself, like to make BP lists? These lists aren't official, and Toriyama stopped calculating power levels for a reason so why do we create lists? I feel the need to do so, and it's infuriating because I know my numerous lists are ultimately pointless.

Yeah, but power scaling can be accomplished without the use of arbitrary numbers, and I don't know about fun. It's often infuriating because there are so many variable you aren't sure what you want to believe is the case. I can totally see why others have fun, but at this point it's just becoming an unhealthy obsession for me :( .

I'd assume people make them for reference for versus topics, or just because they like making lists. People post them for people to point out any mistakes.

Sometimes it's fun to make a Battle Power list, but it isn't really true to the spirit of Dragon Ball. The Cell and Boo arcs are there to proof that these characters can't and shouldn't be measured by numbers. Heck, even in the Saiyan and Freeza arc the scouter was mainly used to show how the villains were underestimating the heroes.

I stopped making Battle Power lists years ago. There's simply no point because there's no way to verify them.

Masochism.

Fixed your post. This is a more apt, accurate answer, I believe.

Doesn't Vegeta say something along the lines of "Do you think we Saiyans can be reduced to numbers?" Or something like that I think. Really ironic quote if so.

I used to be really into power levels as a kid but in the last 5 years I've been more dedicated to power chains than anything else. Even better are tiers of characters, such as

Tier 1
SSj Vegetto
Gohan Boo

Tier 2
SSj3 Gotenks
Ultimate Gohan
Super Buu/(Gotenks/Piccolo)

Tier 3
SSj3 Goku
SSj Gotenks
Fat Buu

etc etc this just gives you a close indication of where powers are at...it doesn't have to be exact and a lot of times the manga doesn't specify who is actually stronger but based on a little deduction we can form a tier of opponents.

Power level lists are just so arbitrary that they serve no use when analyzing the manga but a tier list or a power chain can help you to understand the actual story a little better, IMO whereas power levels are just #*#&#@^!@*!(

Tiers are a much better way to represent power, i think. It's easier to do and doesn't reduce a character to a bunch of numbers. Also, it's much easier to use if you want reference in a debate.

And that's your opinion? I didn't know you could form the opinion of another person.

I think people make them for references but that just brings more debates or arguments. I don't make Battle Power list. But I do use numbers. I use 1 - 10 , 1 - 50, or 1- 100. Sees easy enough. Even though I just go by the big number one rule of action fiction. You're as strong as the plot needs you to be. If one day Toriyama has Chazou turn evil and all this time he's been holding back power greater than Birsu then so it should be.

It's just a fun thing to do, as SSJ2 pointed out. If you're open to opinions and change, you can get better at discussing versus topics and such. I feel like I added nothing to this conversation.

I just decided to do a scaling chart. It's not done yet, but this is what I have:

Goten is the weakest in GT? Oh boy did you just messed up haha. I have Goten and Trunks equal. I mean Trunks didn't fight that much in the first arc and when he did he usually got his a*** beat. Also how is Pan > Goten and TRUNKS O_O. Besides Trunks statement wasn't that later disproven?
