Goku as a father BOZ pre-raditz

So we all know Goku gets a lot of crtiticsm about his parenting aspects, some even question his sincerity during his rosat times with gohan and his motives to stay in the other world.

But surely he was a great father and husband the first 4 years of Gohans life? It just looks like he always took care of Gohan, helped to bring food and wood etc. He was still a crappy friend since he never went to see his old friends for years, but as far as being a father how do you look at it?

It just seems like ever since the first time he died something happened to him that changed him forever.

I totally agree. He was never that same Goku after he met his brother Raditz. Half because he had to do what he had to do to keep Earth and the Universe safe and the other half of his Saiyanhood showing more through him as he learned more about it and grew older.

I love seeing that Goku a lot, though. He was a great dad at that time and I think he's always a great dad throughout the series. It's really awesome seeing that family man Goku, though, especially seeing him starting off at the End of Dragon Ball.

I'd say it changed him back to who he was pre-Piccolo's defeat at the tournament.

What happened to Goku during those years between EoDB and BoZ were exactly what Roshi feared... Goku believed he was the strongest and lost a lot of motivation to improve himself. Being smacked in the face with a big ol' "there's always someone stronger" seems to have reawakened that drive, and cemented said drive for the rest of his existence.

For those few years, Goku was probably a decent enough father during those years... but only because he had nothing better to do.

Goku is not even terrible considering that unavoidable circumstances lead to their separation for prolonged periods of time. The only questionable decision Goku made in his fatherly life was neglecting to be revived after he was killed by Gohan's refusal to destroy Cell. Honestly though, his death was Gohan's fault soooooooooo... Goku's not inherently a bad father, he clearly cares about Gohan, but luckily Gohan's understanding enough to understand why Goku was absent for 7 years.

He's not a perfect father which makes him a great character.

Goku may be absent as a father and care for fighting more than anything, but he is a good father at heart. He does care for his sons, and takes care of them at the time they're together. He is flawed, and while i agree that he isn't the most developed character in the world, he does have a lot more depth than people give him credit for.

Also, his friends can't complain that he didn't visit them in the 5 year gap, they also didn't visit him. Goku had a son to care for but the other character's were just chilin' at the Kame House doing nothing. I know they didn't know about his son, but you can't complain about a friend that never visits you if also didn't care for visiting him.

Yeah my bad, I got it mixed up with EOZ when his friends tried to visit him for years and he was always off training. Goku definitely wasn't in the wrong in BOZ.

Funny that Goku's still a better father than a lot of jackwads in real life who disappear before or right after the birth of the child.
