It seems to me that the canon debate is a big part of this forum. I know that some people refuse to see anything bar the manga and guides as relevant in discussion. For me personally, what I consider as my personal canon is everything that doesn't contradict the manga. For example the other world tournament (excluding Pikkon slapping villains around in hell) doesn't contradict anything, and therefore although it's not actually canon, I include it in my PERSONAL canon. So I was just wondering, do you guys have a personal canon, and what's in it? |

I consider everything canon until stated otherwise by Shueisha or Toriyama. I just put everything in their respective universes to avoid contradiction. |

I like being an a*** about the idea so my personal canon is all of the anime filler and video games. Nothing else. |

Anything not in the source material is not canon and is irrelevant, that includes all guidebooks and adaptions. That's pretty much my default position on canon for anything. |

I kinda feel the same. I feel like the original work is the manga therefore that's the most canon material out there. Then Toriyama's word and what he says is okay and what's not in the guidebooks. That's what I consider canon. |

For me, it doesn't really matter if something is canon as long as it's good, but there's something bothering me. People say that they consider, let's say, DBZ Movie 1 to be canon, except the part were everyone seems to know Gohan before the Saiyan arc. I am seeing a lot of this, people saying that they consider something to be canon except for certain parts. If there's at least something that contradicts the manga, it shouldn't be considered canon, and you can't take a single movie or filler and chose what's canon in it and what isn't. I'm not that strict with canon unless it is about things like power levels, strength comparisons and more. For one, I consider the first Bardock movie canon because it does not contradict the manga. I also consider the History of Trunks special canon except for technical stuff like mirai Gohan being stronger than17 & 18 one on one, because it is not like that in the manga. |

That's what I was never able to understand. How can you accept a piece of something as canon but not the rest? You might as well accept it as canon as a whole or not at all. It really doesn't make sense, to me, to accept pieces of material as canon like that. It seems kind of incomplete. Plus, only like a scene of the Bardock events is worthy of accepting as canon since that small piece appeared in the manga at a later time. The rest of the movie is like any other movie. |

Only parts that don't contradict the manga are accepted by me, certain filler does this (Pikkon for example) |

I do believe that the manga it's the only true canon source, since it's the original work. However, the fact that something is non canon shouldn't stop one's enjoyment of it. And that's what bothers me, people disregrading something because it's non canon or trying to make something to be canon just because they like it. That's why i'm a little bothered with some canon debates.

Bardock and Trunks are not like the other movies because the likes of Broly, Bojack etc. Are not even mentioned in the manga at all. Whereas several key components of the the two specials are in the manga already, so the fillers are totally acceptable except for the stuff that are contradicting like mirai Gohans strength and so on. I consider them part of the story. |

I'm guilty of accepting both the Bardock special and the Trunks special as canon, and if not canon, at least mostly canon. In addition to this, I also accept anything that seems like Toriyama could've written it as canon, regardless if it is or not. For example, the driving school episode. There's nothing to contradict that it could've happened, and it features the odd comedy that makes Toriyama's many series so likeable. However, I don't use these examples in arguments for obvious reasons. |

Manga, then guidebooks then Toriyama's word. I just got done reading a whole essay about authorial intent and how it cannot be used to logically discern events in a story that have already been established. This is why I place him at the end of my "canon chain" Here's the thing; just because the guidebooks have a few mistakes doesn't mean they're all inaccurate. It doesn't mean because they got something wrong you throw them all out. They are there to clarify things, not make out right declarations or create a new story line. Their sole purpose is to help readers understand the manga. The manga takes precedence but you can't just go "well, this is wrong in the guidebooks therefore IT'S ALL WRONG"....that's a logically fallacy. I think association fallacy. |
