Which do you take more seriously, for lack of a better word? Personally, official Anime Subs > Herms strength checker right now. While I do think his work is great and I applaud him and anyone else who helped, it is after all just an elaborate fanslation. Which is why I trust the official Toei subs more and think they hold more weight in a debate. Of course, a line that shows up in the anime but not the manga shouldn't be taken into account or used as proof. Edited by Kienzan, Jan 16 2014, 08:22 PM.

The thing is, Herms is the closest thing we have to a proper English Manga translation. That's why we use him because we understand the translation for the official English manga is lacking in a few points. And we've seen Herms back himself up, its not like he just translates, he shows how he has knowledge on the Japanese language as well. The SUBS though really only work for the anime and we obviously use herms for the manga. And considering the stuff the anime tries to do, its something I'd definitely choose Herms over. |

I take Herms ~ Viz when it comes to the manga. Both have their pros and cons, but they are each fantastic translations. The subs are only good if the line corresponds directly with the Japanese manga, which we really cannot know. |

Herms seems to know what he's doing, so I see no reason to put official subs above his translations. |

Well the anime does change some stuff around, most noticeably the line about Kid Buu being the strongest (which is thrown in with a line taken from the manga) |

I know Jack and them used to use the anime subs for certain debates. I think they're great, but I'd rather use a translation of the manga for the manga. |

If theres a conversation in the anime that 100% corresponds with a manga conversation, that would pretty much be translated from the manga, wouldn't it? It would just be from an organisation that actually has some influence and rights over DBZ in comparison to a single fan. Don't get me wrong, if you're trying to prove something and you want to pull up a quote, I'm not saying it'd be better to watch through the episodes and try to find it. Herms is far more convenient. Heres an example of what I meant. If someone pulls up a Herms quote in an attempt to disprove someone, and the second person pulls out the offiial translation (that is worded in a way that better supports his point) then person B has won in my eyes. Or if you have some subs downloaded, posting them rather than a Herms quote would seem more authentic to me. |

So basically you're saying if someone brought up the anime's conversation between Goku and Piccolo on the Lookout, they'd auto-win. |

The one people always bring up where they claim he asked Goku if he was comparable to Cell. |

I think Herms said something like "The VIz translation is only 70% correct". I don't think Herms think he's 100% correct but I'll take Herms over the official subs due to Herms being more accurate |

He said he'd give it an arbitrary 7/10 rating with a 10/10 being an impossible perfection translation. Just a little different than saying it was only 70% correct. He's giving it a rating not a percentage of it's correctness. This is one of the issues I got involved directly with him about over at Kanzenshuu. I said I would trust the Viz over him and we had some exchanges and that's when he said that...I think he admits there's not too many, if any, radically different meanings behind any of the statements in the Viz and that it is acceptable. I just use the strength checker for ease of convenience. It's online lol. I just don't like this notion that the people who translated it for Viz didn't know what they're doing and that somehow Herms>Viz because of that or something idk i get that vibe from people. I could be mistaken. |

It isn't that. It's the notion that a direct translation without being "Americanized" is more trustworthy. |

Just translating the words from Japanese to English leads to all sorts of contextual errors... |
